Aquartet of Mount Gambier drivers were in the spotlight during the weekend’s Vailo Adelaide 500 in a fitting finale to the season.
Young gun Kai Allen was the talk of the town for his double duties in both the Dunlop Super2 Series and Repco Supercars.
Coming into the final round of the series Allen was still in contention for the Super2 championship, however an error in race 1 saw the title slip from his grasp.
Despite this he finished second in race 2, wrapping up third spot in the championship and helping Eggleston Motorsport claim the teams’ championship for the second successive year.
Fellow Super2 competitor Jobe Stewart also had a successful weekend, while sprint car drivers Scott Enderl and Glen Sutherland carved up the track as part of the NAPA Sprint car Invitational on a custom built city track.
Allen found himself the centre of attention of Saturday, after Grove Racing’s Richie Stanaway was ruled out of driving the Penrite car 26 due to delayed concussion symptoms.
The youngster was allocated the drive in Saturday’s Supercars race 1, however was unable to gain dispensation due to his Super2 commitments, prompting Dale Wood to take the wheel.
Permission for Allen to pull double duties on Sunday in both the Super2 and Supercars was granted overnight Saturday, with the 19-year-old racing first in the Super2 category, before jumping into the big league just 30 minutes later.
He finished 22nd in the field, which was a baptism of fire before he starts full time duties with Grove next year.
Stewart finished sixth in Saturday’s race 1, however a time penalty allocated after the completion of racing saw him drop to 10th.
The teenager started from P4 on the grid in Sunday’s race 2, next to Allen in P3, and managed to leapfrog a spot to finish third.
Enderl had a solid weekend of racing, qualifying seventh in Flight 1 out of 20 cars on night one.
In Heat 1 he started third and finished in the same position, while in the A Main he began in ninth and ended in 10th position.
On the second night of racing he qualified 11th in his flight, starting the heat in sixth spot and finishing fourth.
Unfortunately he was penalised one position after the race for an unsafe pass.
Enderl then started the B Main in first position and crossed the line third.
Sutherland also had a successful outing, timing third in his flight before winning the inaugural heat of the Vailo 500, before finishing fifth in the A Main feature.
On night two he timed seventh in the flight and started third for the heat.
Unfortunately Sutherland was spun by another car which sent him to the rear of the field requiring a push start.
He went on to finish eighth in the heat, before starting the B Main in 10th and eventually finishing seventh.
