High powered racing action returns to Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway on Thursday night for the 31st annual Kings Challenge.
It will be a big night of racing with a host of big names competing in the challenge, including current national champion Lachlan McHugh along with another 49 cars locked in to race.
Other notable names include James McFadden who won the challenge in back to back years in 2022 and 2023 as well as local drivers Glen Sutherland (pictured), Scott Enderl and SA’s Daniel Pestka who will be looking to take home the win.
This year the race will include an international flavour, with Chase Randell and Riley Goodno coming over from the USA to compete as well as a few others.
There will also be other race categories competing on the night as the Street Stocks will provide some high speed action to entertain the crowd.
Thursday night’s meeting will be a part of a long stretch of speedway action with nine nights of racing, including Warrnambool, Avalon, Bordertown, Mount Gambier then finishing it all up with the Australian Title in Murray Bridge.
Event manager Cary Jennings believes there will be a big crowd on Thursday and is hoping for around 3000 spectators.
“If we get 3000 people there that would be excellent,” he said.
“Our Speed Week attracted around 3500-4000 people and if we get that same crowd here then that would be great for Mount Gambier and the accommodation and all that which should be great.
“We’re looking forward to a big crowd and we’re bringing in extra caterers, some of the teams will also have their merchandise there.”
Jennings said the crowd can expect a great night of racing with some high level talent.
“I believe with the entry list we have got most of them would make the final in an Australian Champion or Classic,” he said.
“The competitors that we have got are first class, you will not get much better in the world than what we’re going to have here on Kings Challenge night.”
Gates will open at 3pm for a 5pm start and Jennings recommends bringing along some cash on the night because Eftpos may not work due to poor service and connection to NBN.
