Sporting rivals join forces for charity

Two Limestone sporting club rivals joined forces over the weekend in an annual charity fundraiser for a great local cause.

The Foodbank Food Drive took place for the fourth year at Casadio Park as International Soccer Club and Centrals Soccer Club came together off the field to raise funds and donate food to Foodbank SA Limestone Coast.

Foodbank SA Limestone Coast regional manager Lynne Neshoda said the event raised over $450 and more then 150kg of food which will make approximately 1200 meals for the community’s most vulnerable.

“It is something we do every year with the International and Central soccer clubs and we love their continued support,” she said.

“The team members and their supporters bring food and money on the day which they donate at the gate. It is nice to have the support of the soccer community and to raise awareness of what we do at Foodbank.

“The donations all help in getting food out to people that need it most and the demand is always increasing, we are lucky to have the soccer community support and we thank them for their contribution to Foodbank.

“Vince Versace originally instigated the campaign; he wanted the International Soccer Club to be aware of Foodbank and what we do in the community and to give back. The Centrals Soccer Club has always been involved as well.”

International Soccer Club sports director Michael Prior said the food drive was well-supported by soccer players and spectators along with people driving by to donate.

“It is our home game against Centrals which is also our Indigenous round and our sponsors day, so we generally get a decent crowd, so we have targeted that game to try to maximise the return,” he said.

“We just want to get behind community events and community groups as much as we can and give something back to the community.

“Foodbank is something that gives direct back to the locals because we donate food – and finances if we can get it – and it goes straight onto the shelves of the local Foodbank.

“We know it is going directly to the families in our community that need it the most.”
