Sports voice heard on national stage

Veteran Mount Gambier sports commentator Gorden “Milo” Milosevic has been short-listed for a prestigious national radio award.

Mr Milosevic and two others are finalists in the best sports presenter on a country radio station category in the 2021 Australian Commercial Radio Awards.

The Blue Lake city resident will don the obligatory black tie and travel to the Harbour City of Sydney in February to learn his fate at the awards ceremony.

He is no stranger to this gala event as he was called on stage a few years ago to be acknowledged for his 25 years of involvement with the commercial radio industry.

As part of the nomination process, Mr Milosevic submitted an audio file containing highlights of his broadcasts over the previous 12 months.

They included a “grab” of his interview with 2020 Brisbane Lions Brownlow Medallist Lachie Neale whom he had first spoken to on air as a teenage star with his home club Kybybolite in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League.

His time in the industry began 31 years ago and has always been with the one AM station on the 963 frequency.

It was formerly 5SE and is now known as Triple M.

Mr Milosevic told The SE Voice that he was pleased to be named as a finalist.

“Regardless of the final result at the Australian Commercial Radio’s Gala Night of Nights, it has been an honour and privilege to present the Barry Maney Hyundai Know-It-All’s Football and Netball Show as well as other weekly local sports segments,” Mr Milosevic said.

“I have appreciated the ongoing support of station manager Pat O’Donnell.

“There has also been the input of valued commentators “Fred” Smith, “Hooker” Ransom, Mal Coutts, Kirsty Johnson and Tracie Layley along with the expertise of announcer Ewan Grant.

“It has enhanced the quality of the content that is aired across the Limestone Coast.”

Originally from Tailem Bend, Mr Milosevic moved to Mount Gambier in 1974 following a work transfer with a State Government department.

His successful footy career continued with the North Gambier, Penola and East Gambier clubs.

Over the course of 189 A Grade games in 10 seasons in the Western Border Football League, his career highlight were the back-to-back flags with the Bulldogs in 1982-83.

After his club involvement ended, Mr Milosevic spent a season as the publicity officer with the Mid South East Football League followed by the on-air role with the then 5SE.

Commercial Radio Australia chief executive Joan Warner said entries had been lodged by 260 stations across the nation.

“Congratulations to all the talented finalists across metropolitan and regional Australia on their outstanding work, fantastic creativity and commitment,” Ms Warner said.

“We look forward to celebrating their achievements and rolling out the red carpet once again.

“The national awards cover 39 categories.

‘Winners are announced in each category across four areas: metropolitan, provincial, country and syndication/production company and encompass all areas of commercial radio broadcasting including news, talk, sport, music and entertainment.

“The radio awards differ from television’s Logie Awards in they are peer judged by industry members.”
