State’s best target championship victory at Burrungule

South East Field and Game recently hosted the 2024 South Australian Field and Game Association State Championship.

The event attracted 124 sporting clays competitors who nominated for the event held over a weekend at the picturesque range of Burrungule Park.

Wintery weather conditions prevailed over the entire weekend with sponsors for the 150 target event including LaPorte Australia, Bronzewing Australia, Nobel Sport Italia and DeLaRo Australia.

Prizes were on offer after the first 100 targets on day one courtesy of sponsors Blackbird Industries and Vickery Bros.

A GRADE: Callum Meade, Jason Caldow, Leigh Upton and Darren Hannah.

Overnight leaders on 97/100 at the conclusion of the first day were Anthony Panetta and John Younger, while snapping on their heels on 95/100 were Chris Wright, Jeremy Kent and Mathew Libbis.

Callum Meade on 93/100 led A Grade and Nick Bologiannis comfortably led the Junior category with 93/100.

As the Sunday morning dawned cold and damp, competitors needed to shoot 50 targets set by Ken Atkin and his hard working crew.

B GRADE: Len DeCandia, Geoff Leigh, Paul Dunn, Mark Moss and Peter Rugless.

Jeremy Kent had hauled his way back in contention to finish on 144/150 and tied with John Younger who shot 75 targets straight.

Younger has previously won 13 South Australian state championships with his first in 1984 (40 years ago) and he needed all his experience to win the 25 target shoot off with Kent to claim another title.

Anthony Panetta placed second in AA Grade with 142/150 and a shoot off was required to determine third and fourth, with Matt Libbis prevailing over Josh Vickery.

C GRADE: Michael Gates, Frank Kentish, Rhys Ferrari and Joshua Woods.

Another notable result was Nick Bologiannis scoring 136/150 to claim the highly competitive Junior championship by six targets.

Deanna Gibbison 125/15 took out the Ladies title by nine targets, Ron Rhook was Veterans champion with 133/150 by four targets and Chris Wright 136/150 narrowly claimed the seniors championship.

Promising Junior Jack Dyson shot 119/150 to claim the Sub-Junior championship by 11 targets.
