South Australian motorists are one step closer to accessing real-time fuel price monitoring, with a company named to oversee the state’s first trial.

Attorney-General Vickie Chapman said Informed Sources had the experience and skills to ensure that South Australians were provided with accurate, timely information about petrol prices.

“Informed Sources has been involved in the petroleum industry for more than 30 years -and are the minds behind the smartphone app ‘MotorMouth’, which already provides information to consumers on petrol pricing,” Ms Chapman said.

“They are also responsible for undertaking a similar role with the Queensland Government’s petrol price monitoring trial. “Their successful bid follows a thorough evaluation of all prospective applicants.”

The Liberal Government committed to delivering real time petrol pricing, following the findings of an extensive review undertaken by the South Australian Productivity Commission.

The Commission’s review found that while petrol price cycles still existed in those jurisdictions that did have fuel price monitoring, the presence of real time pricing data helped consumers find low cost fuel.

“We are not interested in delivering a scheme that has either no impact or a detrimental one for consumers – we want to help consumers save money by giving them information to help them find the cheapest fuel at any time,” Ms Chapman said.

“Fuel retailers will be required to register for the two-year trial in February, with the data to be made available to app developers. “It’s anticipated motorists will be able to access real-time accurate information through apps and websites by the end of March.”
