Street Stock drivers make mark

Three local Mount Gambier speedway drivers have wrapped up a great season in the Southern Street Stock Series.

Jayden Edwards, Thomas Garner and Corey Crafter competed in all six rounds of the series at Whyalla, Mildura, Mount Gambier, Hamilton, Portland and Horsham.

With the season all wrapped up several weeks ago, presentations were held in Renmark recently with the three locals racking up plenty of accolades.

Edwards took home the glory by winning the series with Garner finishing fifth in the series and also named most improved while Crafter finished tenth in the series and took home the award for best presented vehicle.

In the Street Stock Racer class the drivers drive a six cylinder sedan with the most common vehicles being a Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon.

This year featured Crafter driving a EL Falcon with Garner steering a VY Commodore and Edwards an FG Falcon.

Crafter said it was a thrill to be recognised for their racing, with Mount Gambier drivers performing well in the competition over the years.

“It’s good to try and get a bit more out there because a lot of the speedway stuff is focused on sprint cars whereas the Street Stock Division has been a pretty solid place,” he said.

“We have got Anthony Beare who’s a multiple Australian Champion and has a lot of state titles, Mount Gambier for the Street Stock drivers has produced some pretty good drivers like Seb Berry, Jayden Edwards’ old man Barry who is an ex Australian Champion, Mark Jennings who’s another local and an ex-Australian Champion.

“There are quite a few around and we just want to get it out there a bit more and make the crowds a bit bigger to watch Street Stock racing and not just go to the speedway when the sprint cars are on.”
