Strong winds test players

Atypical October day with blustery conditions greeted players for round two of the Southern Ports Tennis Association season.

The match of the round was between Millicent/ Beachport and Lucindale Cockatoos with the former breaking its drought of wins since the 2018-19 grand final.

Bob Williams and Nick Clifford enjoyed a great tussle throughout the day, while Darcy Bateman and Mark Bucket got their money’s worth having a 7-5 single, 10-8 men’s double and a cracker 7-5 mixed double.

Millicent/Beachport eventually claimed the honours by just two sets.

The new Frances/Naracoorte team ventured west to Kingston and the home side showed its experience early winning the top three sets in mixed doubles.

However, Frances/Naracoorte evened the score in the remaining doubles and singles started with a great game between Tarrant Fudge and Tim Parker with the former victorious, while Richard Martin defeated Tyler Atkinson 7-5.

Frances/Naracoorte’s bottom team players proved the difference to win by eight sets.

The Lucindale Koalas snatched an early lead in its battle with the Lucindale Roos.

The Koalas won four out of the six mixed doubles matches, but the Roos’ men responded by claiming six singles wins to secure the overall honours.

The final match of the round was played at Robe with the Lucindale Wombats in town.

With the club buzzing for its first home game of the season, Robe enjoyed a great start by winning each mixed doubles battle.

Heather Pitt took a big fall during her mixed contest and had to forfeit her singles game, but Robe only dropped five sets for the rest of the day.

Robe won 19 sets to five, while Naracoorte had the bye.

This weekend’s match of the fourth round is Lucindale Roos against Robe.

Frances/Naracoorte plays the Lucindale Koala’s at Naracoorte and the Lucindale Cockatoos host Kingston.

Naracoorte faces Lucindale Wombats on its home court while Millicent/Beachport has the bye.

All games will start at 1pm.
