Student receives first-hand newspaper experience

My name is Kaitlin Boyd and I am a student at Mount Gambier High School. Last week I got the opportunity to do two days of work experience at the SE Voice.

Being a journalist has always been something I have wanted to do and being able to do work experience for The SE Voice set everything in place.

It was awesome being able to learn so much. It was great to be able to meet some of the people who work on the paper and getting to see how hard they work. Everyone I met was so nice and welcoming.

Over the two days I got a behind the scenes experience of what its like to be a journalist. It was an amazing opportunity, I learnt so much about journalism and had a lot of fun.

I got the chance to see how the papers are put together, how much work and effort is put into the job and some of the many things that are needed to be done.

It is clear that a lot of time is spent working on every aspect of not only the paper but everything they do. While I was there, I learnt how to operate a camera and took a few photos down at the Valley Lakes Conservation Park. It was amazing to see the difference between camera lenses and how they affect the photo quality.

This was probably one of my favourite parts although I loved every part of it. Seeing how to organise and set out the paper was interesting. I got to see how it was set out and put together, the process is amazing. I did not know what to expect.

It was so cool to see how everything is done to get to the final product and seeing the effort put in to get from a blank page to a newspaper article is insane. I noticed that social media is used a lot throughout journalism for things like advertising, local updates and keeping up with local events.

Along with having the paper its good to have an account on social media because of the amount of people that use the platform now, it gives the business more visibility.

I expected a lot out of this and I was not disappointed at all. The different aspects of the job were incredible to see. It is crazy to think of and see how much time and effort is put into the paper.

Getting the opportunity to do work experience was awesome. I would not change it for anything and getting a behind the scenes view of journalism was the opportunity of a lifetime.

It was great to see what it is like to be a journalist; it was a little bit different to what I had expected but over all it was an absolutely amazing experience that I would definitely do again.

It really gave me an insight on how things work and the organisation needed behind it. It was amazing getting this opportunity and it was so much fun.
