Teen gears up for ‘fight of life’

AMount Gambier teenager is gearing up for ‘the fight of his life’ in Melbourne this weekend.

Liam Povey, 15, has been selected to compete at Judd Reid’s “The 8 Man Eliminator” on Saturday night as an undercard fight.

The mammoth event will feature Australia’s very best full contact talent all in the one location.

Billed as a “one of a kind night”, there will be four undercard bouts and the all-important 8 Man Eliminator as the main event.

Povey is a member of the Mount Gambier Martial Arts Academy and will be taking on 16-year-old Kyan Redfern from Parkes, NSW.

The duo has fought each other twice before with Redfern winning both fights by the narrowest of margins.

Povey said this match would be different as they will battle it out Budo MMA style with striking, throwing, takedowns and grappling all on the agenda.

Povey said, while he may not be as experienced in this area as his opponent, going off their previous tussles this one promised to be something special.

“In preparation for his fight I have been training at the Dojo five nights a week,” he said.

“On Monday, Wednesday and Friday night I focus on all-round fighting, while on Tuesday and Thursday nights I have been working on finetuning my grappling skills and fundamentals.”

Povey’s bout is scheduled for 2 x 2 minute rounds and will be evenly matched in weight and height.

Once again this promises to be another close encounter, but this time Povey hopes to turn the result his way.
