Telstra rings in new service era

A century-old tradition at Millicent has recently come to an abrupt end.

A public fee-paying phone box was first erected at the Millicent post office in 1921 and such a facility has been maintained on this George Street site ever since.

After 100 years of fees, Telstra has decided that all of its public phone boxes across Australia will now be permanently free of charge.

Fee-free calls will now also be available elsewhere in Millicent at Park Terrace, DeGaris Street and Wyrie Road.

The major telecommunications company has allowed free phone calls to be made from its Millicent public phone boxes over Christmas for several years.

A similar gesture of goodwill has applied around the nation.
