Tennis action served up

Round 2 Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season was served up last weekend with action between Mount Gambier and Reidy Park kicking off Division 2.

It was a back and forth tussle for each team with Reidy Park’s Ky Edwards beating Mount Gambier’s Michael Cameron 6-3.

Mount Gambier’s Ben Kerin gave Reidy Park a match back, defeating Christopher Cowland 6-0.

Will Cameron continued the run of form for Mount Gambier into the next rubber by beating Stephen Young 6-1.

Reidy Park found success in the doubles competition to round out the overall match count defeating Mount Gambier 7-5, while Mil Lel and Glencoe had almost the same story over on court 4 at Olympic Park.

Craig Moody gave Mil Lel its first win 6-1 against Mark Feetom.

David Cole found form for Glencoe and served up a win over Jason Brooks to give Glencoe its first win, 6-3.

Mil Lel was able to come back and swiftly steal the game away from Glencoe, but that did not mean it was going down without a fight.

Alice Tentye, Eliza. Cole and Alison Auld were able to give Glencoe some additional victories highlighted by an impressive 6-1 win against Mil Lel.

Despite the doubles victory it was Mil Lel that ran out overall winners 7-5.

Over on court 7, it was almost a clean sweep for West Gambier as it set out to be a major competitor for the rest of the season with a solid win over Suttontown.

Jamie Higgins, Matthew Charlton, Mark Stutley and Shardon Edwards gave West Gambier its first four sets of wins.

Charlton dealt Liam Angew a solid defeat of 6-0, tagging alongside teammate Stutley against Cory Sharam with a 6-0 win.

Edwards had tough competition against Lizzie Doyle, but was able to break away and get the win 6-4.

Casey Sampson was the only Suttontown player able to defeat their West Gambier opponent, beating Gemma Ballintyne 7-6.

A tough game for both West and Suttontown, but Sampson remained the stand-out for the match.

West snatched the rest of the wins for the contest, winning the overall match 11-1.

Mil Lel sits at the top of the ladder after two rounds, followed by Reidy Park, West Gambier, Mount Gambier, Glencoe and Suttontown.

Next Saturday Mil Lel will take on Reidy Park, Glencoe will face West Gambier and Suttontown will look to secure its first overall set win against Mount Gambier.

In the A Girls played on Saturday Reidy Park faced West Gambier with close results for each side.

Reidy Park’s Jayme Young defeated West Gambier’s Ella Jolley 6-2 and Division 2 player Maggie Collins continued the winning run for Reidy, putting West’s Kyra Kunchel under pressure to secure a 6-2 win.

It was a close game with the final score being 3-29 to 3-24 with Reidy Park holding the upper hand.

Meanwhile, a strong Mount Gambier outfit took to the court against Mil Lel/Glencoe.

Shae Delaney, Alita Huyser and Giaan Ferguson were able to get the wins for Mount Gambier and provide a comfortable start, while Mikayla Pearson came through for Mil Lel/Glencoe by defeating Clare Hopgood 6-4.

It was unfortunate for Mil Lel/Glencoe when Mount Gambier rallied and claimed both doubles wins, which will be made harder next week when they face ladder leaders, Reidy Park.

West sits in second, Mount Gambier third and Mil Lel/Glencoe rounds out the bottom of the ladder.

Mount Gambier will face West Gambier next Saturday and it will be an opportunity for the former to claim the prized place on top of the ladder.

Division 1 had major differences of scores as Centrals/Uniting/Gambier defeated Uniting 9-3, Reidy Park dominated against Mount Schank to notching up a solid score of 11-1 and West Gambier and Glencoe were inseparable, recording a tie 6-60 a piece.

Centrals/Uniting/Gambier sits in first position on the ladder ahead of Glencoe in second, West Gambier third, Reidy Park rising to fourth, Uniting in fifth and Mount Schank dropping to sixth.

The Fast4 social competition also started last week, with Fast But Not Furious having the first official bye.

Dane’s Divas fell at the hands of Mount Schank Blue, while Low Expectations might have given themselves the wrong team name, beating Suttontown 4-2.

Mount Schank White won 5-1 against Let’s Have Some Fun and Reidy Rebels secured its first win of the season against The Unreliables 4-2.

Nine teams are contesting this season’s competition with fun and excitement promised across the courts.
