Tennis on test weekend? That’s not cricket!

Round 9 of the Southern Ports Tennis Season was an unfortunate casualty of the Adelaide Test Cricket, with one match abandoned and many undermanned teams across the league on Saturday afternoon.

Penola Rangers had a very convincing win over the Lucindale Koalas, moving themselves into third.

Frances/Lucindale Eagles maintained their undefeated title with a win over Kingston.

The Lucindale Wombats found another win over the Robe Roosters; and Robe Rebels just snuck home against Naracoorte.

Robe Rebels 13-116 defeated Naracoorte – 11-108

Naracoorte travelled to Robe with only 11 players, giving the Rebels a three set advantage to start the day.

The mixed doubles had the Rebels off to a strong start, led by captain Egan Regnier and Andrew Brown who defeated Will Malone and Poppy Moyle-Read, 6-4.

The Rebels’ form continued into the men’s singles with wins to Egan Regnier, Tim Malone, Travis Woodward and Jesse Robertson.

However, Naracoorte were not going down without a fight.

Their women won 5/6 singles – only dropping seven games across the six sets.

Up 11 sets to eight heading into the doubles, the day could still go either way.

Naracoorte started strong with wins in the top and bottom ladies doubles.

However at the end of the day, Robe’s men were too strong, winning the final sets to secure the points.

Three set winners for the Rebels were Egan Regnier, Tim Malone and Travis Woodward, while for Naracoorte it was Kelsie Moyle-Read and Katelyn Baker.

Lucindale Wombats 15-137 defeated Robe Roosters 9-111

It was a close start to the tie between Robe Roosters and Lucindale Wombats.

With each team winning three mixed doubles each.

The singles were also very close with three women’s singles going Robe’s way and three the Wombats’ way.

The men’s was also close with lots of 7-5 scorelines.

So the day came down to the men’s and ladies doubles.

Going into the last doubles Mark Buckett from the Wombats had not dropped a game all day, but pairing up with Adrian Maywald against David Mills and Jordan Aston, they had a fight on their hands, in a fantastic 9-7 match that went the Wombats’ way.

In the end the Wombats scored five of the six doubles to get the win.

Winners of all their matches from Robe was Paul Obst and from the Wombats it was Mark Buckett, Lyndal Johns, Sam Crocker, Bron Longbottom and Toby Longbottom.

Frances/Lucindale Eagles 15-135 defeated Kingston Crays 9-126

Both teams were missing higher order players and there were many matches that went down to the wire.

Bob Williams, who filled in as the Eagles’ number one lady, played James Lehmann who filled in as the Crays’ number one lady, played in three very close rubbers.

In each match Williams was down and almost out but he hung in and clawed his way back to win 7-5, 7-5 and 9-7 – a fantastic effort for one of our senior members.

Standout matches for Kingston were the women’s singles with wins to youngster Jacob Mules, Stacey Lehmann, Alex Menz and Nicola Crane.

Three set winners for the Eagles were James Crossling, Tarrant Fudge, Craig Jones, Oliver Close and Bob Williams, however for the Crays no one made the cut.

Penola Rangers 21-152 defeated Lucindale Koalas 3-71

Penola defeated the Koalas in Penola’s biggest win since its inception.

Penola’s top order was boosted with Adelaide young gun Astrid White, back from tournaments showing her class partnering with Daniel Hackwill with both number ones winning all three sets convincingly, too strong for Leanne Graetz and Rowan Wilkin.

They were followed by Penola’s number two seeds hitting their stride with Karmel Finch and Owen Edge winning all three sets and setting the scene for the rest of the order to have a strong day out.

Mitchell Baker was the shining light for Lucindale, winning both his singles and men’s doubles in a close singles beating Cam Bartop 6-4, with other close singles being Penola’s Caroline McGrath only just beating Cate Orton in a marathon match 7-5 and Edge beating Sherwin 7-6 in a tie breaker.

It was a great day out with Penola putting on another impressive arvo tea with Karmel Finch’s homemade chocolate éclairs and Lachlan Heysen’s chicken sandwiches being crowd favourites.

Beachport Pirates vs Beachport Buccaneers.

Round 10

With one round to go before the Christmas break, teams will be desperate to make their move on the ladder.

The undefeated Eagles should go in confident against the Wombats, but the Koalas could have their work cut out for them against the Beachport Pirates.

Second will play third when the Buccaneers travel to Kingston – this match could go either way.

Naracoorte and Penola will battle it out, Naracoorte desperately hoping to hold their finals position.

This match is moved to Saturday afternoon to avoid an array of Christmas parties for both teams.

Finally, expect the scores to be tight in Robe for the Louis Ling Cup, where the Roosters will be looking to make up for their defeat back in Round 2.
