Tennis stars ace regional event

The South East’s top junior talent proved themselves once again at the annual Foundation Cup tennis tournament at Berri last week.

The region was represented by 24 players across four grades from 10 to 17 and Under against the state’s best from Hills Fleurieu, River Murray, Eyre Peninsula, Lower Northern and Upper Northern and Yorke.

South East coordinator Cassie Edwards said each player enhanced their reputation during the enjoyable four days on the court.

“It was a successful event for our South East teams,” she said.

“It was very intense with a lot of tennis played in pretty much a day and a half, but all the players per- formed really well and produced some great tennis.”

From Monday to Wednesday teams fought across mixed, male and female doubles games before a knock-out singles tournament wrapped up proceedings and the South East team produced plenty of highlights.

Reidy Park’s Emily Edwards stood out to win the 17 and Under singles event and secure selection in the state team.

West Gambier’s Emily Jolley almost followed suit, but fell short in the girls 15 and Under three v four playoff, while Zayne Young and Jorja Mitchell also reached the quarter finals in the same age group.

South East pair Lucy Handbury and Jayme Young both reached the 13 and Under semi-finals, but were forced to face off with the former victorious in securing the state squad berth.

Handbury enjoyed a successful campaign and also secured the coveted 13 and Under sportsmanship award, which was voted on by her opponents.

In the combined competitions the 13 and Under outfit was the Limestone Coast’s top performer.

The team won five of its six matches to be the runner-up just one point behind the winners, while the 15 and 17 and Under squads both finished fourth.

Edwards and Handbury will represent the state in the City v Country at Adelaide in December, while the Lakes Junior Tennis will begin next Saturday.
