Tigers and Central in arm wrestle

Saturday’s early Division 1 Mount Gambier and District Baseball League game between Tigers and Central was an arm wrestle with no runs scored until the third inning. Lead-off batter Koby Chant went on board after his infield hit resulted in an error and Kyall McLean also found base from a fielder’s choice.

They were both batted in by Nathan Meinck who hit safely to centre-field to put the Magpies in front. But Tigers tied the game up after Brayden Morton’s long hit to centre-field scored Levi Morton and Jesse Foster’s texas-leaguer to left-field helped Matt Thompson home.

Central flexed its muscles and put the game beyond doubt in the top of the eighth when Dylan Gull and Alex Ridding both scored on Koby Chant’s thumping hit to deep centre-field. Despite having more safe-hits, Tigers was scoreless for the rest of the game and lost 5-2.

The result of a one-sided late game between South Indians and Federal the game was never in doubt from the get go. South batted first and Damien O’Dine singled and scored on Dean Hamilton’s infield hit that attracted a wild throw. Hamilton then scored on Ben Morale’s hit to centre-field before the Indians added five runs in the top of the third following consecutive safe-hits from Bruce Morale, Hamilton, Ben Morale, Alex Lewis, Jesse Balshaw and Travis Lockwood.

The Demons’ only reply came in the bottom of the third when they scored their only run for the game. Alex Pearson hit safely to centre-field and scored on Alex Reppin’s safe-hit to the outfield. But it was all South for the remainder of the game.

Two more hits in the next inning from Bruce Morale and Hamilton were both batted in, while three runs were scored in the sixth. South finished off the game in style by compiling another five unearned runs. Only Balshaw, Morale and Ryan Placucci were batted in from a huge hit by O’Dine before the Mercy rule was invoked with the scoreboard reading 17-1.
