Tigers earn stripes with back-to-back flags

Kybybolite v North Gambier

Grand Final A

Kybybolite sealed back to back Limestone Coast Women’s Football League premierships on Sunday as they defeated North Gambier in a hard fought battle in Casterton.

Neither side made a large impact on the scoreboard in the opening term as Kyby could only get one major score with a few minors while North came up short with two minor scores.

After the opening term Kyby held a seven point lead.

North started to obtain a lot of the possession in the second quarter, with their efforts rewarded as they hit the scoreboard twice.

Kyby on the other hand could not get anything going as they went scoreless in the term.

At the half time break North had taken the lead and Kyby now trailed by seven.

Kyby responded well in the third term as they locked the ball in their forward 50 for most of the quarter.

However they struggled against North’s desperation defence as they could not apply much scoreboard pressure, only kicking one goal in the term while also adding four minor scores.

After the hotly contested quarter Kyby had regained the lead as North trailed by only three points heading into the deciding term.

Kyby showed their experience and kept the momentum going as they struck early to extend their lead.

After the early goal Kyby continued to keep the ball in their half for most of the quarter and despite struggling to put the game away as they had three points in the term, their defensive efforts were enough to help seal the win as North went scoreless in the stanza.

After the match Kybybolite’s Dellie Brown was named best on ground.

Kybybolite coach Chris Boston thought his side played its best footy of the season despite the tough competition they faced.

“I thought they had it in them but the way North came at us today they never let us have it easy,” he said.

“They played the best footy all year and they deserved it and I’m glad they got over the line.”

Boston had a few players he thought were standouts in the win.

“I think obviously Dellie Brown, just in and under all day, I thought Lily Clifford-Finch did a great job on Tess Andrews the best and fairest of the league, she did a good job to keep her quiet and I think another one would be our ruck Jedah Huf,” he said.

Kybybolite defeated North Gambier 3.10 (28) to 2.4 (16).

Casterton Sandford v Kongorong

Grand Final B

Casterton Sandford capped off a great season with a home grand final win over Kongorong on Sunday.

The Cats got off to a solid start in the opening term, kicking two goals while the Hawks only managed a minor score despite Kongorong dominating the play early on.

Casterton continued to slowly add to their lead with another goal in the second term.

However they still had room for improvement as they registered two minor scores which helped keep the Hawks in the game heading into half time.

In the third term the Cats began to pull away with the win as they had their best scoring quarter with two goals.

Kongorong on the other hand continued to struggle as they went scoreless again, and heading into the final term the Cats held a 32 point lead.

The Cats finished strong as they continued to shut down the Hawks and denied them of scoring again while also getting another goal on the board to seal the victory.

Casterton’s Tessa Marra was named best on ground while Phoebe Carlin led the game in goals with three.

Casterton assistant coach Scarlett Jarrad was excited to get the win on the home deck on Sunday.

“I feel a bit overwhelmed to be honest,” she said.

“I thought they could do it being our home ground and with everyone switched on.

“Kongorong are such a strong team and they probably play a bit like us, very hard for the ball and strong over the ball side.”

Jarrad thought Tessa Marra and Indi Longhurst were the two standout players.

“I think Tessa Marra was amazing, she gives everything when she’s out there,” she said.

“Indi Longhurst is a first year player and her season has been unreal, she’s just going to get better and better every year.”

Casterton head coach Corey Wombwell was pleased there was a good local crowd that supported the side on Sunday.

“We’re pretty lucky to have it here and it’s great to see the crowd who turned up to watch a home ground final and get around everyone is great,” he said.

Casterton Sandford defeated Kongorong 6.6 (42) to 0.1 (1).
