Tigers rattle Magpies’ cage

Tigers rattle Magpies’ cage

The penultimate round of the 2022 Mid South Eastern Netball Association season will be remembered for a thrilling draw played between Tantanoola and Kalangadoo.

The Tigers won the toss and chose the centre pass which they utilised well through Emma Gould who put her side’s first score on the board.

The Magpies responded through their goalies who did not waste any time with precision feeding from Jayde Peacock and Sophie Wrightson.

The quarter went goal for goal with both sides not giving an inch, but Kalangadoo opened a three-goal lead through accurate shooting from Abbey Duncan.

The Magpies were able to turn ball over with some impressive defensive midcourt pressure and did not waste any time converting it in the goal circle to protect their lead through the second and third terms.

Defensive efforts from Lauren Kain and Reanna Weatherall saw them turn over crucial balls for their side and extend their lead to six going into the final break.

The last quarter did not disappoint with both sides fighting hard for every ball, but the Tigers still came out firing.

The home side made changes with Gould coming out to goal attack and Jami Walker back to goal shooter which kept Kalangadoo’s defensive unit busy.

A high-pressure quarter from the Tigers saw them outscore the visitors but the scoreboard remained tied 49 apiece at the final whistle.

Glencoe v Kongorong

In the absence of Jenna Paproth for Glencoe Laura Edwards stepped into goal attack role and worked hard to create space for her counterpart in Malinda Markiewicz.

The Hawks were put on the backfoot early with the floating Glencoe defence proving too hard to penetrate.

At Kongorong’s attacking end the height of Tilah Buckingham was the preferred avenue and her battle with Glencoe’s Chantelle Cocks was on from the start, with neither player backing away from the long, contested balls.

Markiewicz had it her way in the opening quarter scoring 20 goals for the Glencoe side and this high intensity continued throughout the game.

The Murphies’ Ashlea Edwards worked patiently to find scoring options in the goal circle despite the pressure being applied by Kongorong’s Emily Lightbody.

The defensive duo of Riley Buckingham and Sarah Lucas did their best to gain possession for the Hawks, but their long ball transition was easily turned over by Glencoe’s defence.

The work rate of Glencoe’s Donna Jaeschke and Kongorong’s Rach Perry was a constant for their sides with both driving strongly in attack and getting hand to ball in defence.

The final quarter forced the Murphies away from their preferred steady game style as the Kongorong side confronted them with plenty of body on pressure.

Hawk Kate Wright and Glencoe’s Chloe Pfitzner were having an impressive battle on the wing, while Tilah Buckingham continued to be the focal point at Kongorong’s attacking end.

The Hawks continued to persist with long transition balls which were strongly intercepted by Sarah Edwards or Pfitzner to wrap up the convincing 74-32 win.

Hatherleigh v Port MacDonnell

Hatherleigh hosted Port MacDonnell in its last home game of the season and took the points comfortably.

The Eagles applied heavy defensive pressure early on and were able to force the Demons into creating errors, which saw the home side take a seven-goal lead going into the first break.

The home side stepped up a level in the second term and continued their dominance from end to end.

Maddie Redman and Rosie Nettle worked well together and were able to find great space to convert.

The third quarter was a more even affair as the Demons were able to find Lara Wilson and Kirby Carrison a lot easier.

Hatherleigh remained in control, but the defensive pressure from Port MacDonnell made Telfer and Watson work the ball around until they were able to find the best option.

Going into the last quarter the last term both Hatherleigh and Port MacDonnell continued to work hard down the court.

Liza Mutch ran hard all game for the Demons and was able to create some turnovers.

Halfway through the last quarter youngster Niah Faulkner was injected into the game at goal shooter for her first A Grade game and combined well with Redman.

Hatherleigh strung together a consistent four quarters which saw them take a 19-goal win.

Robe v Mount Burr

With both teams fighting for a spot in the finals it was always going to be a hard-fought game.

Mount Burr came out firing with Ebony Clark dominating the girl circle and guiding the team to a 15-10 lead at quarter time.

Robe found it hard to settle in their attack line with some poor decision making, which saw Madi Haggett and Olivia Dean capitalise on any turnovers.

Robe needed to lift its defensive pressure and came out firing in the third quarter with Sarah Laurie dominating, shooting 10 out of their 13 goals for the quarter.

The Roosters’ defence of Austin and Perkins put the pressure on Mount Burr’s goalies, with Nulty struggling to find her eye in the first half of the quarter.

When Robe’s confidence lifted a better team game with more energy on the court was the result and it won the quarter by two goals.

The final quarter saw Robe trying to peg the six-goal lead back.

However, Mount Burr stepped up with Nulty finding her feet at goal attack and dominating the circle, with Laura Shultz and Meg Fennell feeding the ball with precision.

The Roosters had their chances, but Mount Burr came away with the fight and determination to the end, winners by nine goals.
