At the tender age of five, Violet Davis has already found her passion and excels at it. Competing at the recent Follow Your Dreams Competitions at the Adelaide Convention Centre she danced her way to become the Under 5 national champion.

The young star was delighted at her biggest success in her short career so far. “I could not believe I won,” Davis said. “I am really happy and excited because I worked very hard in the studio and at home to achieve it.”

To claim the national title, Davis had to overcome more than 50 competitors at regional and state events across Australia. Then she was forced to face 15 dancers in the national final and did not look back.

Davis’ winning performance was a contemporary piece choreographed by her solo teacher Christina Jenkin. To find the right tempo to the instrumental music at the national competition, Davis said she put in a lot of effort being introduced to new moves.

“I found it quite challenging to learn as it had lots of things I had never done before in it,” she said. “I have worked really hard for the entire year. “About a month before I started working extra hard on my solos to prepare for this particular competition.”

Like everything, a lot of Davis’ preparation towards the event was interrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. She said the build-up was not ideal, but found ways to continue doing what she loves. “I had to do my dancing on Zoom for an entire term which was challenging,” Davis said.

“Lots of competitions were postponed, but thankfully we were able to do most of them later on in the year.” Davis has danced for almost her entire life. She has called the stage her happy place for four years and taken her skills to a new level two and a half years ago when she joined MJ Dance Studio.

Davis said she loves all aspects of dancing from the buzz on stage to meeting new friends. “I love learning new things at dancing,” she said. “I really enjoy dancing with and spending time with all of my MJ Dance Studio friends.”

Davis’ whole family plus MJ Dance Studio’s Jenkin and Maria Slape support the dancer every step of the way. They will continue to do so in 2021 as Davis prepares for another big year with a full calendar of competitions ahead including another tilt at the national championship.
