Title defence slipping away from Magpies

Kalangadoo’s chances of another hattrick of flags have been seriously dented after a dismal showing at home against Robe in the Mid South East Football League match of the day on Saturday.

The 62-point loss has dropped the reigning premiers to fifth on the premiership table with only five rounds to play.

The Roosters had two more scoring shots than the Magpies and achieved the remarkable return of 16.4 as they controlled the contest.

On the other hand, the home side managed a pitiful return of 4.14 from 18 scoring shots.

It would be rare for any team launching a premiership defence to boot only four goals on their home turf.

Although hit by injuries, more than half of the Kalangadoo team have played in at least one senior premiership.

The loss has relegated the Magpies to a position where a major round berth is far from certain.

They are now one win and a full percentage point behind the Demons.

Another advantage for Port MacDonnell is they have had their second bye while Kalangadoo have only had one.

Robe is home to Nangwarry in round 14 while Kalangadoo heads to Tantanoola.

Magpie coach Al Lyon pulled on a jumper for the first time since the 2023 grand final win over Hatherleigh at Port MacDonnell.

Injuries have blighted the other playing coaches in the MSEFL with only Hatherleigh newcomer Tom Hutchesson playing every game so far in 2024.

Mount Burr’s Clint Gallio has missed one game while Robe’s Nathan Brown has been sidelined for three games.

Kongorong’s Cameron Sandercock and Port MacDonnell’s Josh Woodall have both suited up for seven games.

Tantanoola’s Jack Dawe has played 10 matches but has a season-ending knee injury.

Glencoe’s Reece Duncan and Nangwarry’s Shane Raymond are non-playing coaches.

Hatherleigh v Nangwarry

Undefeated ladder leader Hatherleigh was not bothered by the trip to Nangwarry and got the job done with an 86-point winning margin.

The Nangwarry Oval is one of the best wet weather surfaces in the MSEFL and this helped the visitors post the biggest score of round 13.

As expected, the Eagles took the opportunity to give plenty of game time to colts who will be in their 22 in the major round.

Oe of the few blemishes from the game for Hatherleigh was that it conceded four goals in the opening term.

The Hatherleigh defence tightened up thereafter and only allowed four more goals in the remaining three terms.

It is worth bearing in mind the blue and golds allowed lowly Kongorong to score five goals in the second quarter of its early-season game at home.

Such facts should be considered by punters prepared to wager on this Hatherleigh side becoming the first to go through a season undefeated.

Hatherleigh hosts Port MacDonnell in round 14 while Nangwarry heads to Robe.

Tantanoola v Kongorong

Tantanoola reversed the result of their early season encounter at Tigerland and defeated Kongorong by 66 points.

The Tigers felt hard done by in that match and so had the return game safely in their keeping not long after half time.

Just 11 points separated the teams at the long break and then the Tigers piled on 7.3 to just 1.1 in the third term.

The match returned to a relatively even share of the play in the last term when Tantanoola added a bit more to its percentage.

After averaging one goal per game in his 10 previous games in 2024, Tantanoola’s Cade Kelly was best on ground and booted six goals.

It was good to see Jack Wilson back on the playing field with Kongorong after a lengthy break from footy.

Playing with Mount Burr at the time, Wilson had won the 2017 Mansell Medal as the league best and fairest in Junior Colts

Kongorong plays at Glencoe on Saturday with the home team having the benefit of a three-week break.

Tantanoola will play host to reigning premiers Kalangadoo.

Port MacDonnell v Mount Burr

Port MacDonnell well and truly made amends for their thrilling eight-point loss at Mick and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr on May 4.

In the return match at their Bay “fortress”, the Demons overcame a gallant Mozzie outfit by just 13 points.

With Mail Medallists Tim Sullivan and Will Macdonald in good touch, the seasiders returned to form and a berth in the top four.

Such an outcome looked unlikely at quarter time as Mount Burr had made good use of the breeze to go to a 26-point lead.

The home team plugged away at that sizeable deficit and eventually took the lead in the third term.

The visitors were only one point in arrears going into the final term but the home side was more settled in the final term.

Mount Burr has the bye in round 14 while Port MacDonnell heads to Hatherleigh.
