Front lawn fashion has proved a hit with Millicent woman Bri Scanlon (pictured) – who has been selected to represent South Australia in a national competition.

Ms Scanlon, 25, won the SA section of the 2020 Myer Fashions on Your Front Lawn and will now compete for the national title during Melbourne Cup week.

This year’s Fashions on the Field competition has been reimagined and is being held online due to COVID-19, with entrants from around the country asked to upload four individual racewear outfits throughout the duration of the virtual competition.

Ms Scanlon said she was beyond excited to be picked as the SA representative for the competition.

“This title is so incredibly prestigious and I am humbled and proud, I am still pinching myself since receiving the news,” she said.

“Fashions on the field has been in my family for many generations.

My Nanna and Aunty Peg are two of my main inspirations.

“Nanna would always dress beautifully no matter where she had to go. When she passed away, we found a large suitcase full of millinery,” Ms Scanlon said.

“One of my all-time favourite pieces of millinery is actually made from one of her hats thanks to Helen Varcoe from Helen Mary Millinery.

“I now look at entering fashions as an ode to my Nanna and Aunty Peg for their love of fashion.”

Ms Scanlon has entered fashions on the field events for the last six years, taking part in more than 20.

“This is the largest competition I have won to date, but recently this year I also won the Races SA 2019/20 state title and I have placed in the top 10 for the Myer State Finals twice in the past,” she said.

“The fashion standards lift every year so I definitely didn’t think I had a chance. I always get excited to see what the other girls are going to come out with next.

“I had many friends entering this year alongside me so if I didn’t win I was hoping they would take it out.”

Ms Scanlon said she was surrounded by a dedicated “glam squad”, comprising family and friends.

“My mum is the best mum a girl could ever ask for and is my racing buddy who oversees the dress alterations, accessory painting and last-minute hat making.

This is as much a win for me as it is for her, and the rest of my family and partner Sam are super supportive,” she said.

“I can’t thank VRC and Myer enough for ensuring that this year’s competition could still go ahead even in such an unprecedented time, as well as the judges Carrie Bickmore, Nadia Bartel, Kim Wilson, Elliot Garnaut and Dom Bagnato for picking me to represent SA.

“Congratulations to all of the other state finalists who have been announced and I can’t wait to see who else will be joining the lineup.”
