A Grade – Robe 47 def by Tantanoola 55
Robe and Tantanoola played off in the Mid South East Netball A Grade first semi final, with Robe winning the toss and taking the first centre pass.
However, defensive pressure from Tantanoola caused early turnovers and they pushed out to a handy four goal lead.
Robe settled and scored their first through Demi Carter.
The Roosters struggled to adjust to the umpiring, while the Tigers settled.
This prompted an early tactical change with Robe centre Annie Regnier swapping with Sophie Bates at WD.
Tight defensive pressure caused issues for both sides and the remainder of the quarter went goal for goal, with the Tigers up 14-9 at the first break.
At the break Regnier and Bates swapped back to their original positions.
Robe scored the first two goals of the second quarter, narrowing the lead to three.
Both teams struggled to settle, but strong work by Casey Walker in centre for the Tigers fed the ball with precision to Emma Gould and Jami Walker who capitalised on their scoring opportunities.
Gould’s height caused headaches for Emillie Gould and Alannah Jennings.
At the other end Robe’s feeders Regnier and Lucy Perkins worked overtime to break through the Tigers’ defence, with their goalies Carter and Sarah Laurie making the most of their limited opportunities.
Strong defensive work by Kate Bromley, Bella Poulish and Shelby Ryan helped Tantanoola out to an 11-goal lead at half time.
Robe broke the Tigers’ first pass and from there they went goal for goal.
The Roosters showed patience in attack, while Tantanoola struggled to break through the defensive work of Robe’s attack line.
Tantanoola swapped Bromley and Poulish at the five minute mark.
Robe continued to apply pressure in Tantanoola’s attacking end with youngster Sophie Bates keeping Tigers playmaker Kate Varcoe quiet.
Tantanoola increased their lead by one heading into the last quarter 12 goals up.
Robe came out firing in the last stanza with clever defence turning over Tantanoola’s first two centre passes to score the first three goals of the quarter.
Tantanoola settled and scored.
The Tigers returned Bromley and Poulish to their original positions.
Robe’s movement in the attack line was swift and both Carter and Laurie found the post and shot accurately.
J Walker utilised her circle feeders to give herself the best opportunity to score and rarely missed an opportunity.
Despite Robe’s strong last quarter Tantanoola had done enough in the first half to secure the opportunity to play in the preliminary final.
Robe’s best players were Sarah Laurie and Sophie Bates, with Jami Walker and Casey Walker best for the Tigers.
A Reserve – Port MacDonnell 55 def Glencoe 31
Port MacDonnell came out firing and established a 13 goal lead with the Narelle Lewis, Brooke Williams and Kelli von Stanke combining well and proving unstoppable.
Glencoe made defensive changes to try to shut down the Port MacDonnell attack line by bringing Alannah Clayton into the goal circle for some height and intensity.
In the second quarter Glencoe came out firing and had hands all over the ball, creating multiple turnovers that Zoe Mulraney converted on the score board.
Jessie Gosden and Chloe Hentschke created drives through the mid court despite the pressure Michelle Moore and Bailee Lewis applied.
Shannon Scheidl shut her goal attack down in the third quarter, making it impossible for her to score.
Madeline Watson had to step up and work extra hard to get in position and score off the turn overs.
In the final quarter Glencoe brought on some fresh legs in Jorja Mitchell.
Samantha Brierley, Samantha Cordy and Alannah Clayton created pressure in the goal circle making it difficult for Port MacDonnell’s goalies to find their rhythm.
Lara Wilson worked hard down the opposite end forcing turnovers and even a held ball.
Best players for Port MacDonnell were Brooke Williams and Lara Wilson, while for Glencoe it was Samantha Brierley and Jessie Gosden.
B Grade – Tantanoola 31 def Port MacDonnell 27
Going into the first quarter Port Mac was the dominant team playing strong from the start and coming out hot.
At quarter time they were up by three and the weather was not playing the game with wind being crazy and the rain starting to come down strong.
Going into the second quarter both teams came out strong but with a few blood rules and changes from the girls working hard, Tantanoola found their groove and worked the goals back by both their defenders Indianna Marshall and Danni Rutkowski and their strong attack line pressure of Chloe McCallum and Danni Vanderheul.
At half time Tantanoola was up by two.
Going into the second half the Tigers made some changes, bringing on some one of their youngest players Charli Kaigg and one of their most experienced Tarrah Taylor.
Port MacDonnell defenders Ashlee Schwertfeger and Stevie Collins combined well to gain touches and some rebounds.
Tantanoola’s centre Danni Vanderheul and Port MacDonnell’s centre Mackenzie Millard battled tough all game.
Hijisa Hale and Lauren Fensom gave Tantanoola a six goal lead at three quarter time with accurate shooting.
Some great feeding from Jessica Grigg, Elivia Stanley and Kelly Millard from Port MacDonnell’s attack line got them within three goals.
Time was ticking and against Port MacDonnell which allowed Tantanoola to come back with the win by four goals.
Lauren Fensom and Indianna Marshall were named best players for Tantanoola, with Ashlee Schwertfeger and Mackenzie Millard best for Port MacDonnell.
B Reserve – Tantanoola 35 def by Kalangadoo 42
In less than ideal weather conditions Tantanoola came out to a firing start, scoring the first five goals of the match.
Once Kalangadoo settled, they were able to fight back and produce a small two goal lead by the end of the first quarter.
Amy Mason and Chloe Taylor combined well to put pressure on the Kalangadoo goalies and make them work hard for every opportunity.
Maddi Wilkinson and Jodi Greenwood used their experience together to open up the goal circle space.
Leah Kuiper and Ange Case had a tight one on one tussle up the court and were dominant in controlling the court for their respective sides.
Tant made use of their rolling subs with the fresh legs instantly impacting the game and making Kalangadoo adjust to their new opponents.
However, the Pies held firm and adapted well, maintaining a three-goal lead at the half time break.
Tantanoola once again tried other options to lessen the impact of the Maggies, but Kalangadoo moved Greenwood into Centre and Nicole Reeves back into GA for direction and more options, but Kuiper and Kath Reilly cut off these passes which made Kalangadoo revert back to their original positions.
Sally Peters was the main focal point and used her speed in the goal area combined with Holly Walker to try to peg back the lead for the Tigers.
In the end Kalangadoo combined well as a team and continued on with strong defence and patience to take out the win to head into the preliminary finals, winning 42-35.
Best players for Tantanoola were Sally Peters and Kath Reilly, with Maddi Wilkinson and Gemma Box named best for Kalangadoo.
17 & Under – Hatherleigh 62 def Port Mac 55
In a closely contested first quarter Port Mac were the first to settle and managed to get the first five goals on the score board.
Lilly Day shot with accuracy sinking 13 of 14 attempts.
Down the other end Hatherleigh’s Chloe Bellinger and Niah Faulkner were still trying to find their range.
Defensively Port Mac limited Hatherleigh’s flow of play to the goal ring.
In the second quarter Hatherleigh settled and managed to score more freely, with Chloe Bellinger and Faulkner only missing three for the quarter, outscoring Port Mac by nine goals.
Hannah Bellinger was influential in defence, taking many timely intercepts and sending it back to her goalies.
Once again, the third quarter was a tight affair with Port Mac’s Lilly Day becoming the main focal point in the circle.
Sophie Lewis and Deni Brown had a good tussle in the mid court, working hard both on and off the ball.
Meanwhile, down the other end of the court Faulkner continued to shoot with accuracy.
Hatherleigh entered the last quarter with a five-goal lead managing to hold on in what was a close and contested finals game.
Hatherleigh’s best players were Niah Faulkner and Hannah Bellinger, while for Port MacDonnell it was Lilly Day and Sophie Lewis.
15 & Under – Glencoe 50 def Kongorong 27
In trying weather conditions both teams fought hard for the full four quarters.
Ruby Buckley and Rani Janeway were a great match up to watch, both contesting every ball.
The midcourt worked well to deliver the ball down to Violet Thorne who was able to convert for Glencoe.
Addison Graney had a strong game for Kongorong in attack, working hard for her team.
Abby Brant applied defensive pressure all day chasing any loose balls.
Glencoe worked to build a good buffer and were able to continue to add to that lead in each quarter.
Best Players for Glencoe were Ruby Buckley and Violet Thorne, while for Kongorong it was Abby Brant and Addison Graney.
13 & Under – Mount Burr 46 def Glencoe 20
In a replay of the last round both teams were hoping to start strongly.
Mount Burr started the game with Emily Lowndes and Isabelle Ballantyne taking interceptions limiting the Glencoe goalies’ opportunity to score.
The ball was transitioned down court into goals with Mount Burr’s Sophie Smith and Poppy McKenzie getting close scoring shots allowing them to have a handy lead at the first break.
The second quarter saw Glencoe use the ball with improved patience with GS Emma Burdon having more scoring opportunities.
Glencoe’s Mia Richardson moved to GD to have a better connection with Jasmine Haase, creating turnovers and forcing Mount Burr to use their feeders to gain possession closer to the post.
Mount Burr worked hard and continued to extend their lead.
The third saw changes from both teams.
Ballantyne and Lowndes continued to take interceptions and Mount Burr had a smooth transition down court.
Glencoe showed patches of great defence to stop the flow into the circle, however Smith and McKenzie continued to work well in the ring.
Each quarter Mount Burr continued to extend their lead to finish with a 26 goal win.
Best Players for Mount Burr were Emily Lowndes and Sophie Smith, while for Glencoe it was Mia Richardson and Jasmine Hasse.
