Toy run keeps rolling

This year’s Limestone Coast Toy Run will take place on Saturday, bringing a bit of joy in what has been a difficult year.

Baptist Care SA Regional Manager John Merrett said, while the Toy Run might look a little different this year, there were still hopes to build on the 500 presents that were gifted to children and young people last year.

“Because of this year’s events there is an even greater need. Our region relies heavily on tourism, agriculture and forestry – all of which have been impacted,” he said.

“Although Baptist Care SA will not be able to accept toys this year, cash donations are encouraged.

“Gifts will be purchased specifically for each child registered for the Toy Run, to minimise handling and sorting of goods.”

While there will be several runs coming from across the region, the main part of the cruise will leave the old Bunnings site in Mount Gambier at 12.30pm, along Graham Road, turning left on to Commercial Street West to Bay Road, before turning right then heading to Railway Terrace into the Rail Lands.

Mr Merrett said he was expecting 200-300 cars and bikes to take part this year, but disappointingly a family fun day planned for the conclusion of the ride had been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“There will not be any toys on the front of the vehicles, however there is still a decorated bike competition and a show ‘n’ shine at the Rail Lands,” he said.

“It will be a little bit more low key. “If people want to see everything we are encouraging them to watch it from the main street.

“Hopefully next year will be a lot different.”.
