Traders wishing for Merry Christmas

While many things are certain at this festive time of year, Mount Gambier’s levels of Christmas trade are up in the air.

Mount Gambier’s main street is full of “hustle and bustle” ahead of Christmas, but it is uncertain whether tourists will flock to or flee from the city during the festive season, according to Mount Gambier Chamber of Commerce President Hayley Neumann.

“The impact of the border restrictions is likely going to restrict and deter a few people from coming across, but we just do not know what will happen,” she said.

Ms Neumann said COVID-19 had created supply issues for the local retail industry ahead of the festive season.

“Last year there was quite a lot of issues with stock supply,” she said.

“I believe potentially that will be happening again this year, but people have been able to plan ahead because they are aware of it.

“The stock supply issues will likely not be as bad as last year, but things are still taking longer to get here and there are supply chain issues.

“Hopefully this does not discourage people from coming out and shopping locally.”

Ms Neumann said although the borders had opened to South Australia ahead of Christmas there was still hesitation from tourists.

“Our cross-border community members can continue on as they have been however those outside the bubble have to abide by the new requirements,” she said.

“I have got family who potentially will not come because they do not want to be tested on arrival.

“I know at least one person that will not be coming to South Australia for Christmas this year and I am sure everyone knows someone who will not be coming because of it.”

Ms Neumann said she would like to take the opportunity to encourage people to shop locally and support local businesses.

“Cut-off times for online shopping are pretty much done so now come out and enjoy our local shops.

“Support the shops that support us during the year,” she said.

“A lot of stores offer online shopping so you can shop from the comfort of your own home and still support the Mount Gambier community.

“A lot of businesses are the first ones to offer their support to our sporting clubs so let’s get out and support them so they can keep continue supporting us, our kids and the community.”
