Trading the desert for the ocean, Millicent-born Able Seaman Mitchell Rigney reflects on family, country and Anzac Day with Australia’s Federation Guard – the ceremonial face of the ADF.
For Able Seaman Rigney, a proud Aboriginal man from the Ngarrindjeri clan, supporting Anzac Day in France is more than ceremonial, it is special; a tribute to his family.
“My family’s story is entwined into this country’s history,” Able Seaman Rigney said.
“There were many people from my clan who fought in France during the war – 21 family members to be exact.
“Being selected to go over there like many of my family have gone before me is an honour.”
Growing up in the Limestone Coast, Able Seaman Rigney’s journey into the Royal Australian Navy has given him a new perspective and opportunity to represent his people.
“I traded the desert for the ocean, but no matter where I go, I carry on my family’s stories with me,” he said.
“Being in the Navy has given me a new outlook and a way to give back.
“Knowing my nieces, nephews, Elders are all watching me, representing my tribe, means a lot.”
Anzac Day to Able Seaman Rigney is about reflecting on his ancestors’ sacrifices and carrying on their teachings to the younger generations.
“Being able to carry on the lessons learned and the stories from my ancestors to the younger generations is important to me,” he said.
“I want the younger generation to know why this day matters. I want them to know our family story.”
Two of Able Seaman Rigney’s tribal members are commemorated at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, which he plans to visit during his stay in France for Anzac Day.
“Private Arthur Thomas Walker was killed alongside my great-great-great-uncle Private John George Brett Jr during the Battle of Mouquet Farm on August 16, 1916,” he said.
“Private Francis Alban Varcoe was killed during the 2nd Battle of Bullecourt on May 5, 1917; only Uncle John has a known grave.”
For Able Seaman Rigney, being part of Australia’s Federation Guard is a privilege, but the ceremony means little without the stories behind it.
