Travel vouchers ticket to economic recovery

Travel vouchers worth up to $100 will soon be offered to South Australians to use towards accommodation across the state, as part of a “significant tourism stimulus package” that the SA Tourism Commission (SATC) said would further boost the state’s visitor economy and local jobs.

The SA government’s $4m voucher scheme will provide $100 ‘Great State’ vouchers for use at participating Adelaide CBD hotels, while $50 vouchers will be on offer to spend in regional and suburban accommodation – both of which will be made available from October.

According to SATC, a range of tourism operators – including the new Adelaide Oval Hotel, Crowne Plaza, Mayfair Hotel, Hilton Adelaide and the Middleton Beach Huts – have already signed-up to be part of the deal, while others are in the process of registering for the campaign.

It is unclear which of the Limestone Coast’s tourism operators have opted-in to the scheme.

Premier Steven Marshall said the COVID-19 stimulus measure would provide a powerful shot-in-the-arm for the state’s $7.8 billion visitor economy, and the more than 40,000 people it employs.

“This is a call to arms for South Australians to continue to back the local tourism industry by rewarding themselves with a guilt-free staycation,” Mr Marshall said.

“Every additional hotel night booked will result in positive flow-on benefits across the sector, as jobs – from front of house staff to chefs, cleaners and baristas – are supported.

“My government is committed to supporting as many local jobs and businesses throughout the greatest economic challenge of our time, which is why we’ve committed $2b in economic stimulus so far.

“The tourism and hospitality industry is a significant local employer and we are pleased to be able to support them through this voucher scheme.”

South Australian Tourism Commission chief executive Rodney Harrex said the initaitive was a timely reward for South Australians.

“We’re already hearing some incredible rates from CBD hotels who have signed up,” Mr Harrex said.

“Our discount of $100 means South Australians will be able to stay in five-star rooms in the city for prices they have never seen before.”

Travellers will be able to obtain a Great State voucher from Thursday, October 15 until Saturday, October 31 unless the allocation is exhausted prior, for travel between October 15 and December 11, 2020 inclusive.

Saturday night stays in both the CBD, metro and regional areas are not included in the program.
