Travellers look closer to home

Penola and Coonawarra have been nothing short of busy, with exciting events approaching and plenty to explore for visitors from near and far.

Tourism and Support Officer Rebecca Adams-Fulton said enquiries about accommodation in Penola had increased due to upcoming events such as Grapes of Mirth, Coonawarra After Dark and the Penola Coonawarra Acoustic Music Gathering.

Ms Adams-Fulton said Penola saw an influx of tourists over the Christmas and New Year period, with an increase in Victorian travellers. “We have really missed the Victorians,” she said. “It was quiet earlier on when COVID-19 restricted travel but there has now been a huge increase. “I think it’s been busier than ever before. “We have seen South Australians that we have never seen before.”

Ms Adams-Fulton said there had also been an increase in people hiring meeting rooms and halls within the last month.

Some popular attractions in Penola include the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre, Petticoat Lane and the cellar doors. Ms Adams-Fulton said everything was looking “very positive” with tourism in Penola.
