South Gambier v Penola
South Gambier faced Penola at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday, with the Dees starting the day at the crease after winning the toss.
South did not have an ideal start as opener Sam Bradbrook failed to last very long, being dismissed for a golden duck.
Shortly after another Dee was out as Robbie Drenthen had a tough day, falling on one run after facing just two balls.
South found a bit of consistency with Sukhbir Singh at the crease as he made 15 off 42, while more Dees continued to fall as Jed Sims was out on five while Adam Kuhl only made two.
Similar to Singh, Noah Maxwell was patient at the crease but only made eight off 29.
South got a run boost in the back end of the order as captain Elwood Geary came to the crease.
The captain had a solid innings, facing 57 balls and making 34.
South struggled at the bottom of the batting list as Jaggar Geary only made six with Kobi Maxwell putting three on the board and James Miller contributing just one. South finished all out on a disappointing score of 83.
Penola headed to the crease for the rest of the day with Jack Mullan and Lewis March opening, however March did not have the best start as he only managed eight off 25.
Mullan, on the other hand, picked up where he left off last week with a big innings, making 119 not out off 141.
Penola had a few solid contributors with Bredon Smart making 15 and Eli Hunter chipping in with six.
Drew Clayfield finished the day strong for Penola, making 32 and will head back to the crease on day two.
After a big innings Penola finished the day 3/197.
Penola’s Michael Waters and Bredon Smart were solid with the ball, with Waters taking four wickets and Smart picking up three.
Penola captain Michael Waters thought his side played well in the tough conditions.
“I was very happy with the performance on day one, all the bowlers stepped up in the difficult conditions and restricted South to a low score,” he said.
“Then with the bat the top order did a great job and got us into a very strong position.”
Waters thought Jack Mullan had a strong performance with the bat.
“Obviously the main standout was Jack Mullan finding 119 not out, hopefully he can add to that tally next week,” he said.
West Gambier v Mil Lel
Mil Lel faced West Gambier on Saturday at Malseed Park, with Mil Lel winning the toss and electing to bat.
Mil Lel started the day slow as openers Nick Walters and Jarrod Sanders struggled to get much going.
Walters only made three while Sanders was out for a duck.
They finally got going when William Rowland and Vaibhav Patel headed to the crease.
Rowland had a big innings, facing 100 balls for 41 runs which included three fours and three sixes, while Patel made 17 off 66.
Mil Lel had a dry spell in the middle of their order as Ty Dinnison made nine, while Jack Miller was out for a golden duck and Boyd Millhouse put six on the board.
There was a mixed bag at the bottom of the list as Thomas Smith spent a solid amount of time at the crease but struggled to put many runs on the board, making seven.
Craig Lock and Thomas Rowland both went for ducks while Craig Hicks finished the innings strong, facing 44 and making 30.
Mil Lel finished all out on 122 before West Gambier headed in to bat to close out the day.
The Roos struggled to get things going in the short amount of time as Mil Lel dismissed Justin de Jong for a duck and Sam Hunt on 10.
Jack Geddes and Kayne Badman will start at the crease on day two after West finished the day 2/18 after 11 overs.
West Gambier’s Sam Hunt had a great day with the ball, taking six wickets.
East Gambier v North Sportsmans
North Sportsmans took on East Gambier at Allan Scott Park on Saturday in the top of the table clash.
The Tigers started at the crease after winning the toss and got off to somewhat of a solid start as Alex Hutton made two and Michael Johnston made eight.
Brad Robinson started strong, making 20 off 48.
In the middle of the order the Tigers got a big boost as Elliott Fisher had a solid day, making 41 off 69.
The runs kept coming as Nick McInerney also had a decent dig at the crease, facing 115 balls for 37 runs.
The third big contributor for the Tigers was captain Mitch Lewis who put 26 on the board.
North continued to chip away in the innings and added to their score as they got another big boost late in the innings.
Nicolas Brown made an efficient 15 off 16 while Matthew Robinson put 16 on the board, with Thomas Madigan contributing 14 runs of his own.
North finished all out on a strong score of 202.
The Doggies headed into bat to close out the day, with Craig Lynch and Evan Clark playing conservatively.
Both faced 24 balls with Lynch making two and Clark four.
After eight overs East are 0/8 and will pick up where they left off on day two.
