Unified artwork on show at city police station

The Limestone Coast Crime Prevention Section recently embarked on a unifying artwork initiative which now proudly hangs in the front foyer of the Mount Gambier Police Station.

Known as ‘The Coming Together Quilt’, 40 different community groups from the Mount Gambier region – all with a broad range of ages, genders, cultures and abilities were asked to contribute a 50x50cm artwork symbolising the cohesiveness of people. The groups had a month to design and finish their artwork.

When all panels were completed local business – ‘Sew Unique’ generously provided their time and effort to bring the project together resulting in the beautifully bright and unique centrepiece now on display at the police station.

Acting Sergeant Jade Hill, who coordinated the initiative, praised the group. “The quilt is very special to me as an individual because I love the idea of everyone coming together with acceptance regardless of colour, status, age or creed,” she said. “It is a literal piece because all art squares are joined by stitching, which is symbolic of us all being one.

“The quilt is such a vibrant representation of humanity and it is important for it to be on display as a visual to the whole community to experience and enjoy and supports the ethos of South Australia Police. “All community members have contributed in such an amazing way.

Every square is different- just like us as people. “The colours, shapes, sizes, imagery and perspectives are all so varied and even the construction of such a sizeable project was kindly donated by a local business.

“The excitement, enthusiasm and joy this project has brought the community has proven to be such a positive experience for all involved and will continue to be a legacy for years to come.

“It is something I am extremely proud of. I have been able to bring people together in such an important and inclusive way.”
