Division 1
Uniting v Glencoe
Uniting are set to fight for back-to-back Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association premierships after a dominant win over Glencoe on Saturday at Olympic Sports Park.
The Uniting men started strong in the doubles as they secured both sets in a tough battle.
In the top doubles it was the previously undefeated Glencoe duo of Dylan Childs and Patrick Mitchell up against Uniting’s Andrew van den Hurk and Kobe Cole.
Cole and van den Hurk came out firing in the first set, winning 6-2.
Childs and Mitchell responded well in the second as the roles reversed with the Glencoe pair tying up the match, taking the set 6-2.
It went down to the wire in the last set with a super tiebreaker as van den Hurk and Cole just edged out the victory with a tight 10-8 win.
Uniting’s Mat Stark and Jace Maxwell claimed the win over Glencoe’s James Braun and Will Maloney in the bottom doubles.
Stark and Maxwell took a commanding lead with a 6-1 win in the first set.
The second set was a different story as Braun and Maloney refused to let the Uniting pair run away with the win, fighting all the way before Stark and Maxwell eventually proved too good with a 7-5 scoreline.
van den Hurk got his revenge over Childs in the top men’s singles, winning in a 6-1 effort while Patrick was able to get a set on the board for Glencoe, beating Stark 6-3.
Uniting secured both of the ladies doubles sets with Tessa Megaw and Ashlea Dunn taking on Glencoe’s Sarah Edwards and Giaan Ferguson and winning the top doubles 6-1.
In the bottom doubles Uniting’s Jade Delaney and Vanessa Maxwell had a solid victory over Ferguson and Shae Delaney, winning 6-2.
Uniting claimed all three ladies singles in straight sets.
In the top singles Megaw had a great 6-2 win over Edwards while Dunn defeated Ferguson 6-2, with Jade Delaney getting a tough 6-4 over her sister Shae Delaney in the bottom singles.
Uniting were able to get a result over Glencoe without playing all the games with the final score 10-2.
West Gambier v Reidy Park
Reidy Park came away with an upset win on Saturday, taking down West Gambier in a tight contest at Olympic Park.
On the men’s side of the draw it was an even match up in the doubles as the two sides split the sets.
Reidy’s Zayne Young and Harrison Ellis took on West’s George White and Brady Cook in the top doubles.
Young and Ellis were just too good despite a good contest with the West pair as they won the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
It was a tight battle that went down to the wire in the bottom doubles as Reidy’s Ben Gaffney and Michael Ellis took on West’s Peyton Robinson and Shaunn Robinson.
The West duo took the first set in a gruelling contest as it went to a tiebreaker, however Gaffney and Ellis fought back in the second set to tie it all up with a 6-4 victory.
The super tiebreaker lived up to its name as both pairs battled long and hard with West ultimately securing the set, winning 14-12.
In the two top singles Ellis and Young kept the momentum going from the doubles as Young secured a thrilling tiebreaker victory over White while Ellis claimed a solid 6-3 result over Cook.
Reidy got their revenge in the bottom singles as they claimed both the sets, with Gaffney winning 6-4 against Peyton Robinson while Ellis had a tough match against Toby Stutley, before emerging victorious in a tiebreaker.
West was able to get the upper edge over Reidy in the ladies doubles, claiming two of the three sets.
In the top doubles, West’s Jess Stutley and Emily Jolley took on Reidy’s Bailey Young and Maggie Collins.
Stutley and Jolley took home the set in a 6-2 win.
In the middle doubles match Reidy was able to get a set on the board as Stutley and Ella Jolley faced Young and Sarah Brown.
Young and Brown were strong in the contest as they claimed victory, 6-2.
The Jolley sisters were too good for Collins and Brown in the bottom doubles, as they came away victorious 6-3.
Like the doubles, Reidy was only able to claim one of the three sets in the singles.
In the top singles Stutley had a great win over Young, taking the set 6-1, while Collins got the lone set on the board for Reidy as she had a tough 6-4 win against Jolley.
Ella Jolley had a good win over Brown in the bottom singles, winning 6-4.
Reidy Park ultimately proved too good for West Gambier by the barest of margins, winning 7-5.
The stage is now set for the minor and reigning premiers Uniting to face Reidy Park in the division 1 grand final this Saturday at Olympic Park.
Division 2
It was a close contest between second placed Mount Gambier and third placed Suttontown/Glencoe as they faced off at Corriedale Park.
Both sides claimed a fair share of sets on the day with Mount Gambier coming out on top as they defeated the combined side 8-4.
Mount Gambier will now face West/Glencoe in the grand final.
Division 3
Division 3 also featured some close match ups as Mil Lel took on Uniting while Centrals/Mount Schank took the court against Suttontown.
Mil Lel came away with a close victory, winning 7-5, with Centrals/Mount Schank getting the better of Suttontown, with the final result 7-3.
Mil Lel and Centrals/Mount Schank will now face off in the grand final this Saturday.
Ladies Doubles
West Gambier had a 6-0 win over Mount Schank while Mil Lel White registered a forfeit win over Mil Lel Green.
Reidy Park took on Glencoe and came away with a 5-1 victory.
Mixed Doubles
Suttontown defeated Moorak Green 4-2, while Moorak Grey lost to Uniting/Glencoe, 6-0.
Mount Gambier Green were solid against Mount Schank, winning 5-1.
