Vaccine roll-out reaches milestone

Over half a million South Aussies have now had their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine. At least 545,955 South Australians have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the latest data on vaccination rates across Australia.

The feat was celebrated last week when a state government press release was sent out two days before South Australia going into lockdown, with the state then passing the half a million first dose mark. South Australian Health Minister Stephen Wade at the time said the “major milestone” was reached as the rollout continues to scale-up to provide South Australians with access to the vaccine.

“Our COVID-19 vaccine rollout is our doorway out of this pandemic and it’s fantastic we have had half a million South Australians vaccinated,” Mr Wade said. “South Australians constantly step up to keep our state safe from this horrible disease, and it’s fantastic news that half a million people have committed to getting the vaccine. “It’s very important that every single person who has had their first dose follows through and gets their follow-up second dose to maximise their protection.”

According to data compiled by COVID Live at least 545,955 people have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 219,624 have had their second dose of the vaccine. In the press statement, SA Health’s Chief Public Health Officer Professor Nicola Spurrier said it was more important than ever for South Australians to roll-up to receive the life-saving vaccine. “Getting our community vaccinated is the armour we need to protect ourselves against this virus – I urge all eligible South Australians to get vaccinated to protect themselves, their loved ones, the people they care about, and the wider community,” Prof Spurrier said.

“Congratulations to the half a million people who have received their first dose, I remind them all how important it is to commit to getting their second dose too.”

Selected regional, rural, and remote pharmacies are now able to administer the vaccine, with up to 30 South Australian sites initially offering the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine. More pharmacies will be coming online in the coming weeks and months.

In Mount Gambier, UFS Chemist and Star Discount Chemist are among the pharmacies that will administer COVID-19 vaccines, but for people over 60-years-old. The state government said that approximately 100 additional General Practice clinics across South Australia will start providing the Pfizer vaccine over the next month.
