Vera’s Kitchen turns up heat with show return

The ever-popular Vera’s Kitchen will return at the 144th Millicent Show this weekend.

For many years, the Saturday sit-down morning teas, luncheon and afternoon teas in the show hall were well patronised.

The venue was named in honour of the late Vera Bowman who was a long-time convenor of this Millicent Show attraction.

However, a serious structural fault in the stonework of the western wall of the show hall was identified by Wattle Range Council building inspectors several years ago and so the post-war building was closed to the public.

The fault has been repaired and the kitchen has undergone a $90,000 makeover.

Commercial-rated ovens, refrigerators, dishwashers, rangehoods and cookers have been purchased, new lino laid, the power supply upgraded and new benches and cupboards installed.

The work has attracted trades personnel and volunteers and has been overseen by Millicent Show Society committee member Barbara Nitschke.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin secured a $75,000 Federal Government grant and the balance came from the Millicent Show Society.

When fully operational, the facilities will be available for hire for wedding receptions, 21st birthdays, club functions and the like.

A link with the glory days of Vera’s kitchen will be maintained by Millicent Show Society committee member Katrina Keatley.

“I found the vintage glass jugs and salt and pepper shakers that were once used,” Ms Keatley said.

“I took them home and washed them and they will be back in use.”
