Veterans contest Border Cup

Mount Gambier hosted the Veterans Cricket Victoria Border Cup at Frew Park last week, bringing together a group of over 60s cricketers.

Four teams faced off in the Border Cup with two from Victoria and two from South Australia.

South Australia was represented by an Adelaide team, along with the local South East Coasters, while teams from Geelong and Hamilton crossed the border to compete.

The South East team comprised players from Bordertown, Lucindale, Beachport, Penola, Port MacDonnell and Mount Gambier.

The location of the carnival alternates between Mount Gambier and Hamilton each year.

The carnival kicked off last Tuesday with the South East taking on Hamilton and Adelaide facing Geelong.

Both Victorian sides picked up a win on day one followed by another win for Geelong on day two and a win for Adelaide.

On the final day the two South Australian sides faced off with Adelaide getting the win in a low scoring match while Geelong and Hamilton battled it out in a high scoring match which resulted in Geelong getting the win.

South East Coasters captain Colin Murdoch said it was great there are so many participants in the over 60s cricket, with plenty of benefits associated with playing.

“Everyone out there playing is over 60 years old and this is what they do with their day,” he said.

“So you can imagine what that does for their fitness, their mental health and their socialising.

“It’s super important to the health and wellbeing of those who participate.”
