Veterans take over the Bay

Last week was all about the seniors as the Port MacDonnell Bowls Club held its Veteran’s Men and Ladies Singles competitions.

There was plenty up for grabs as the ladies were playing for the Rae Perryman Memorial and the men for the Barry Praetz Memorial.

Only three women nominated for the veterans singles crown, so Heather Richards faced off with Jennie Tilley in a knockout match to meet Jan Dowdell in the finale.

Richards stepped up and defeated Tilley to stay alive.

With both players Richards and Dowdell going end for end, the decider was a close game enjoyed by all.

Dowdell finally got a break and won 21-14 to be crowned as the Ladies Singles Veterans champion.

In the men’s event, Terry Seiler defeated Des Horrigan in another close game 24-11.

Danny Gaut defeated Chris Richards with the former flying out of the blocks.

But Richards’ determination as always closed the gap before Gaut finished up winning 21-16.

In the Final Seiler meet Gaut.

In what proved to be a very tight game, spectators were kept on the edge of their seats.

Eventually Seiler emerged on top and took the crown.

Tuesday social bowls were held in fine conditions with two games of 10 ends of triples played.

There was only one two-game winner being Grant Perryman, Kel Butler and skipper Lorraine Mackereth, while the day was sponsored by Jill and John Broadbent.

It was a great round for the Bay’s mid week Pennant sides with bot outfits taking home valuable premiership points.

Mackereth, Seiler, Keith Dowdell and skipper Bill Richards were in fine form winning their rink 33-25.

The triumph was enough to compensate for Des Horrigan, Jan Dowdell, Kevin Henderson and Robert Hutchesson losing by four shots.

It meant MacDonnell Red held on and defeated Naracoorte RSL by four shots.

Port MacDonnell Blue had a more comfortable afternoon defeating Millicent Blue 48-38.

The Jennie Tilley led rink of Ben Tilley, Danny Gaut and Lance Fisher easily won 24-16.

Michael Glynn, Chris Negline, Barrie Schmidt and Carol Schmidt had a tougher time, but still emerged on top by two shots.

Neither Port MacDonnell Ladies Friday Pennant team could get the job done last week, but the top grade came close.

Facing Millicent Blue, Lorraine Mackereth, Sharon Perryman, Jan Dowdell and Judith Grosvenor showed their skills winning their rink 26-20.

However, Millicent performed a heist to win the contest after Lyn Vanderley, Jennie Tilley, Carol Schmidt and Heather Richards fell 11 shots short.

It swayed the overall picture Millicent Blue’s way 50-45.

Port MacDonnell’s Division 2 team struggled to challenge a firing Naracoorte RSL side and lost 61-36.

Shirley Taylor, Elaine Hutchesson, Cheryl Doddridge and Marilyn Sutton lost 18-33, while Danny Gaut, Jean Fisher, Heather Fox and Elaine Pruis fought hard to go down by 10 shots.

Port MacDonnell’s Division 1 side enjoyed great success in the Saturday Open Pennants round.

Despite facing the tall order of overcoming second place Mount Gambier Blue, the Bays got the job done by 31 shots.

Paul Weir, Terry Seiler, Wayne Dowdell and Tim Wrightson got the ball rolling winning 32-17.

The Bill Richards led rink of Barrie Schmidt, Keith Dowdell and Heather Richards faced the toughest task and still won by nine shots, while Greg Fisher, Judith Grosvenor, Kevin Henderson and Chris Richards won 25-18.

Division 3 tried its hardest to repeat the success, but fell agonisingly short to Millicent Blue by five shots.

Danny Gaut’s team of John Naismith, Chris Negline and Kevin Osman were bowling brilliantly winning 24-19.

Jimmy Williams, Bruce Bain, Jennie Tilley and Kel Butler came within two shots of victory, while Michael Glynn, Lance Fisher, Donald Forbes and Victor Perryman lost 19-27 which would prove costly in the grand scheme of things.

Port MacDonnell’s Division 4 team was never in contention during its road trip to face Millicent Blue.

Jean Fisher, Terry Stone, Marilyn Sutton and Bill McGregor were the closest to victory going down 11-31.

Joe Pruis, Ben Tilley, Rod Sutton and Cheryl Doddridge battled and lost by 25 shots, while Graham Hutchesson, Robyn Burley, Elaine Pruis and Kevin Norman went down 7-39.

It all meant Port MacDonnell went down to Millicent Blue 102 shots to 25.
