Victims remembered

Victims remembered

The Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group, in conjunction with Soroptimist International Mount Gambier, will hold a candle lighting ceremony tomorrow.

The event will be in the Cave Gardens at 5.30pm to remember those that have lost their lives to domestic and family violence.

Each year, the group runs the Domestic and Family Violence Vigil which is part of a national event held the first Wednesday in May each year to raise awareness of the impact of domestic violence; the lives lost, and the families torn apart.

Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group secretary Katherine Davies said 17 lives had been lost this year to domestic and family violence, equating to more than one life lost each week of 2022.

“We hear these figures each year, and it is hard to remember that each of those numbers is a life lost and a family left grieving,” she said.

Ms Davies said the community came together to remember all lives lost due to domestic and family violence, as well as remembering the lives lost locally.

“This year we welcome a speaker from Voices for Change to talk about their own experience of family and domestic violence,” she said.

“We are honoured to have a speaker with lived experience join us at our vigil to help raise community awareness of such a pervasive issue.

“The Limestone Coast Family Violence Action Group is asking the community to show their support by coming together and lighting a candle with a minute’s silence during the vigil.

“Our Limestone Coast community is strong and together we can help continue the conversation about domestic and family violence to ensure we all know there is help available to victims/survivors and also to those who perpetrate violence.”
