Victorian outfits take on Pioneers

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will host a home double header this weekend, with two Victorian sides set to take the Wulanda court in NBL1 South conference round three action.

Mount Gambier will play host to the Sandringham Sabres on Friday night, before backing up against the Eltham Wildcats on Saturday evening.

The Pioneers are coming off three tough losses in the opening rounds of the season, going down to Geelong United and Keilor in round one, followed by a defeat at home to the Casey Cavaliers last week.

Mount Gambier will be boosted this weekend with the inclusion of newly signed import Jayda Jansen, who arrived in the Blue Lake city earlier this week.

Jansen’s arrival will bolster the side, which welcomed Maddy Timms for her first game last week, with Timms forced to sit out the opening round due to clearance issues.

Jansen is a talented guard who will be an exciting addition to the side as the Canadian played the 2024 season NBL1 South season with the Hobart Chargers, where she averaged 18.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game across 17 appearances.
She shot 41.8% from two-point range, 36.0% from beyond the arc, and 90.6% from the free-throw line.

Head coach Matt Sutton said his players were looking forward to taking the court at Wulanda with a strengthened team.

“We have been hitting the training track and trainings are going well,” he said.

“Jayda gets in … so we will be boosted by another player and we cannot wait to hit the court again.

“She was playing in Germany just recently and went home for a quick visit.”

Sutton said his side was in full preparation to host Sandringham tomorrow night.

“They are strong, they are 3-0 to start the season,” he said.

“They have a strong core who have played together for some time.

“They have good depth and size and a new coach who coached Bendigo through undefeated two seasons ago, so they will be really strong.”

Sutton said Sandringham had several players who were standouts, with his side already planning how to shut down their momentum.

“They have got Funda Nakkasoglu, she’s been an outstanding player for a long time,” he said.

“There’s also Lucy Cochrane who is a high level shot blocker and has great size.

“There is also really good depth around those players.”

Sutton said his side would focus on Eltham after tomorrow night’s game, reiterating his team’s one game at a time approach.
