Visitors bring the heat

The Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association Representative team suffered its first loss in the KFC Festival of Cricket as it took on Warrnambool Moyne at Frew Park on Sunday.

Mount Gambier started the day at the crease and got away to a hot start.

Will Rowland and captain Elliott Fisher built a solid partnership and put some big runs on the board.

The duo both passed the half century mark with Rowland making 75 and Fisher 71 including six sixes in his innings.

After the hot start Mount Gambier began to cool down as Rowland and Fisher were dismissed.

Emerson Marks was able to get a few more runs on the board making 14 while Michael Waters contributed 11 before Mount Gambier was all out for 186 after 36 overs.

Taking the ball, Mount Gambier snared a couple of early wickets from Robbie Drenthen in the seventh over.

However things began to go downhill for Mount Gambier as they struggled to take another wicket until the 22th over.

By then the damage had been done thanks to some quality batting from Warrnambool which helped bring home the win for the Victorians as they piled on 190 runs in 24 overs.

Mount Gambier captain Elliott Fisher said the decision to bat first was easy given the big runs scored on the wicket the previous day.

“We won the toss and decided to bat after looking at the wicket and knowing there were some big scores made on it the day before,” he said.

“That sort of made it an easy decision.”

Fisher thought his side did well to make a solid run total but struggled against the quality Warrnambool batters.

“Obviously with runs on the board it’s a big positive but we got off to a very bad start with some seriously good batting from the other team that saw them cruise along and win comfortably,” he said.
