The generosity of Beachport’s Meals on Wheels volunteers does not stop at donating their time.
They are eligible to a daily travel subsidy but they have recently decided to again forego this payment.
This year the volunteers unanimously voted to donate $1000 to an important community event, the New Year’s Eve Fireworks.
Staged by the Beachport District Development Association for over 30 years, the spectacular event brings the local and visiting families much delight as fireworks light up Rivoli Bay mid-evening and midnight each December 31.
Local businesses, families and Wattle Range Council also contributed to the $15,000 display as well as profits from the thrice-yearly street markets and the annual Pool of Siloam uck Race.
For around a decade, meals have been delivered at Beachport and Southend.
Meals on Wheels has operated in various guises in Millicent for over 50 years and it is also a regular occurrence for the volunteer deliverers to donate their travel subsidy back to the organisation for equipment and other purchases.
Among the donations over the years have been a $2000 patient lifting machine for Boneham Aged Care Services in Millicent and a $4950 dishwasher/steriliser for the kitchen at Millicent and District Hospital where the meals for their clients are prepared.
