Wattle Range leader extends festive invite

An open invitation has been extended to all to enjoy some company and nourishment on Christmas Day in Millicent.

“We do not want anyone left behind this Christmas,” Mayor Des Noll said in relation to the initiative of the Wattle Range Mayoral Christmas Appeal.

“Following on from last year’s successful Community Christmas Day lunch another will be held this year in the Millicent RSL Hall.

“All are welcome, especially if you are alone, vulnerable or seeking extra company on the day or want to come for some laughter and cheer.

“We are also very conscious that loneliness does not discriminate across demographics and especially due to the COVID-19 situation families and friends may not be able to unite as usual.

“All donations of non-perishable goods, books, toys and games would be gratefully appreciated to help us make Christmas a better time for those less fortunate.

“Collection bins are located at Fosters Foodland, Woolworths, IGA, Millicent Library and Wattle Range Council Millicent Office and Southern Ocean Tourist Park in Beachport.

“We have been blessed by many donations and would appreciate and welcome more.”

Millicent’s Christmas Appeal had been run for around 30 years by the local churches but this role was relinquished by them at the end of 2020.

The void has been filled by Mayor Noll and other helpers.

“Each year the Christmas Appeal assists around 110-120 local families,” he said.

“Last year there was less demand due to COVID-19 government assistance programs being introduced.

“This year we are expecting more.

“Depending on funds, we hope to provide a Christmas hamper, meat/fruit/veg, fuel voucher, school uniform vouchers and each child to receive a book, game and toy.

“The Appeal Forms for assistance have been distributed to agencies, churches and schools for completion by families/individuals in need and are due by December 10.

“The Wattle Range Mayoral Christmas Appeal is made possible for the generous support by many in our community.”
