Having 100% of its light vehicle fleet powered by either batteries or hybrid energy within eight years is one of the aims of the Wattle Range Council draft climate change action plan.
Established in 2020, Wattle Range Council’s Climate Change Working Group was keen to further the council’s environmental commitments.
It is made up of council staff, councillors and community members.
The group analysed the organisation’s current emissions along with the emissions reduction targets set by other South Australian councils to identify an appropriate target for the Wattle Range Council.
A council spokesperson said this information was then used to develop a list of actions which aim to effectively reduce the council’s operating emissions and promote wider climate change action within the community.
“The draft climate change action plan outlines several commitments,” the spokesperson said.
“Council will continue to strive for best practice and achieving efficiencies in all its operations and environmental best practice is no exception.
“Council will commit to achieving the targets outlined in this plan including the vehicle component and an 80% renewable energy for our buildings by 2030.
“Wattle Range Council will make a commitment to include the actions identified in this plan in its ongoing Annual Business Plans and associated budgets.
“Council will commit to auditing its emissions and reviewing this plan every four years to ensure its actions remain adequate and are achieving a measurable difference.”
The draft plan is currently out for community consultation and a survey has been developed to gather feedback.
