AMount Gambier man has been convicted of fresh weapons charges despite being in custody for similar offences.
Dennis John Pitts, 51, faced the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court presided over by Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos last week for three counts of possessing a prohibited weapon.
Mr Pitts appeared via audio visual link in custody due to being sentenced to a term of imprisonment of two years and five months in the District Court in June this year for trafficking a controlled substance and possessing a prescribed firearm without a licence.
Adelaide lawyer Joanna Caracoussis from Knox and Associates Solicitors represented Mr Pitts via audio visual link while Pero Kolundzic from the Mount Gambier Police prosecuted.
The court heard that police conducted a search of an address in William Street, Mount Gambier on September 6, 2023 under the controlled substances act and located a curved fighting knife, four laser pointers and a crossbow.
“I take into consideration that you are serving a lengthy term of imprisonment so any penalty that I give you will be hypothetical so I am going to give you a conviction with no further penalty,” Magistrate Kossiavelos said.
Mr Pitts was convicted and required to forfeit the weapons.
He will be eligible for parole in July 2025.
