West Gambier holds on with tightly contested win

DIVISION 1


West Gambier v Mt Schank/Mil Lel/Mt Gambier


West Gambier came away with a tightly contested win over the combined side on Saturday at West Gambier in the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association competition.


In the men’s draw, the combined side dominated in the doubles, winning both matches.


In the top doubles Mt Schank’s Will Boston and Mt Gambier’s William Le Cornu teamed up to take on West’s George White and Toby Stutley.


In the opening set both sides battled hard and could not separate themselves from one another as it went into a tiebreaker.


The West duo took away the opening set in the tiebreak.


In the second set Boston and Le Cornu responded well as they tied the match up with a 6-3 victory.


In the final super tiebreaker set it went down to the wire again as neither side could pull away with the win.


It came right down to the end as Boston and Le Cornu were able to seal the deal in the tiebreaker, winning 10-8.


In the bottom doubles Mt Schank’s Brendan McInnes and Mil Lel’s Lochie Arnold took on West Gambier’s Peyton Robinson and Pattrick Robinson.


McInnes and Arnold were strong in the doubles and came away with the victory in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-3.


In the singles, the combined side continued to put sets on the board, winning three out of the four matches.


In the top singles Boston faced White as the two battled it out after an intense doubles match.


White was able to get a set on the board for West, edging out the win over Boston 7-5.


Le Cornu finished his day undefeated as he took on Stutley in the singles and came away with a 6-3 win.


In the number three singles, McInnes had a solid win over Robinson, taking the set 6-2.


In the bottom singles Arnold and Robinson faced off.


Similar to the top singles, this match came down to the wire as Arnold got another set on the board for the combined side with a thrilling 7-5 win.


On the ladies side West dominated across the board.


In the top doubles Jess Stutley and Ella Jolley took on Jorja and Jess Douglas.


Stutley and Jolley were too strong for the Douglas sisters as they took the set 6-1.


West’s dominance continued in the other doubles as Stutley teamed up with Joe Sealey.


TOUGH LOSS: West Gambier’s Peyton Robinson had a tough loss in his singles and doubles matches on Saturday in Division 1.

They took on Douglas and Kelsey Boneham and came away with another set with the score being 6-0.


In the bottom doubles Jolley and Sealey came out on top against Douglas and Boneham with another 6-0 victory.


In the singles the Mil Lel ladies continued to struggle as West were just too good.


In the top singles Stutley and Douglas faced off with Stutley winning 6-1, while Jolley sealed another set, beating Douglas 6-0.


In the bottom singles Sealey took the set with ease, winning 6-0.


West Gambier defeated Mt Schank/Mil Lel/Mt Gambier 7-5.


Reidy Park v Uniting


Uniting continued their winning streak as they took on Reidy Park at Olympic Park on Saturday.


In the men’s doubles Uniting reigned supreme as they secured the win in both matches.


In the top doubles, Uniting’s Andrew van den Hurk and Mat Stark took on Reidy Park’s Zayne Young and Dane Heemskerk.


The first set was competitive as the Reidy duo battled hard but could not come up with the set, losing 6-4.


In the second set van den Hurk and Stark finished strong as they secured a 6-2 match clenching win.


In the bottom doubles Reidy’s Harry and Michael Ellis took on Uniting’s Jace Maxwell and Kobe Cole.


The first set with a tight contest as the Ellis’s striked first, taking the set 7-5.


In the second set Maxwell and Cole responded well as they equalised with a 6-4 second set win.


CLOSE WIN: Mil Lel’s Lochie Arnold came away with a close win in his singles.

In the final super tiebreaker set Maxwell and Cole finished strong.


Taking the momentum from the previous set into the tiebreaker, they took home the final set with a 10-5 win.


In the top end of the singles Uniting started strong as van den Hurk and Young faced off.


Young could not bounce back from the doubles as he fell to van den Hurk 6-0.


In the number 2 singles, Stark and Heemskerk faced off.


Stark took his form into the singles as he claimed the set 6-1.


In the bottom singles Reidy stepped up as they took both sets.


Harry Ellis took on Maxwell, with Ellis sealing the set with a 6-2 win, while Michael Eliis got the job done against Cole, winning 6-3.


On the ladies side of the draw it was very competitive as Uniting took two of the three doubles sets.


In the top doubles Reidy’s Bailey Young and Maggie Collins took on Uniting’s Tessa Megaw and Ashlea Dunn.


Megaw and Dunn took the set with ease, winning 6-1.


In the next doubles Young and Sarah Brown faced Megaw and Jade Delaney.


Young and Brown were able to get a set on the board for Reidy, scraping by with a 7-5 win.


In the bottom doubles it was another close one as Collins and Brown took on Dunn and Delaney.


BIG DAY: Mount Gambier’s William Le Cornu had a big day against West, winning his singles and winning in his doubles match.

Similar to the middle doubles this one came down to the wire but this time it went Uniting’s way as Dunn and Delaney secured the set 7-5.


In the singles Unting finished strong as they took two out of the three sets.


In the top singles Megaw got the win over Young, taking the set 6-2.


Delaney took home another set in her singles as she took on Collins and claimed the victory 6-1.


In the bottom singles Brown took on Vanessa Maxwell with Brown securing Reidy’s only set with a 6-0 win.


Uniting defeated Reidy Park 8-4.


Division 2


In division 2 West Gambier Red took on Mount Gambier with Gambier coming away with a big 11-1 win.


Suttontown/Glencoe took on West Gambier Blue with the combined side winning 9-3.


Division 3


In division 3 Uniting came away with a win over Mount Gambier, winning 7-5 while Mil Lel got the win over Suttontown, 9-3.


BIG WINS: West Gambier’s Joanne Sealey came out on top in her doubles and singles matches.

Ladies Doubles


In ladies doubles West Gambier got a big win over Mil Lel Green, winning 6-0 while Mil Lel White got the victory over Glencoe, winning 4-2.


Mount Schank took on Reidy Park and lost 6-0.


Mixed Doubles


In mixed doubles Suttontown got the win over Mount Schank, winning 5-1.


Moorak Green defeated Mount Gambier, getting the job done on games 27-25.


Unting/Glencoe got the win over Glencoe, winning 5-1. 


Moorak Grey took the win over Mount Gambier Blue, winning 5-1.
