North Gambier v East Gambier
Third place North Gambier will host last place East Gambier in what is shaping up to be an interesting round nine match in the Western Border Football League.
Last week saw both teams fail at the final hurdle with disappointing final quarters against quality opposition.
East Gambier had led at every break going into their final quarter against West Gambier, however they were unable to hold out against the second placed Roos.
While it was not a victory it certainly instilled a lot of confidence in the young East Gambier side.
The side has continued to look more and more dangerous each week, and the Doggies first win since April last year is sure to be coming soon.
North Gambier never had the lead in their game but taking on Millicent at home they put up a valiant fight.
At the end of the third quarter the Tigers were only eight points down, but the reigning premiers blew them away in the final term.
It is clear that last week both sides were shaking off some cobwebs after a week off and failed to play four quarters of football.
The team that is to take the four points from the round nine clash is going to have to perform every quarter and not let the opposition get away from them.
South Gambier v West Gambier
Aslow start for West Gambier saw the side pull off a come from behind victory against winless East in round eight and now the Roos face off against South Gambier.
South Gambier had a disappointing loss in its round eight match against Casterton Sandford and will be hoping to bounce back.
The young South Gambier had looked more and more dangerous before the bye, as they challenged two of the top three sides.
But the loss which saw them kick only the one goal for the game will be a disappointing result and the side will hope for a better effort against West Gambier.
West Gambier will also hope for a better performance this round having let East Gambier get off to a quick start.
West Gambier will know a similar performance could result in a loss this time as it faces off against more quality opposition.
Millicent v Casterton Sandford
Millicent has looked unbeatable so far this season and the next team to attempt to stop the side’s winning streak is Casterton Sandford.
Casterton Sandford now sits fourth on percentage after a win over South Gambier and an upset win could see them jump to third.
It would be a big result for the Cats but the team will be aware that it’s a big ask to beat the reigning premiers who have been almost faultless this season.
Casterton Sandford has been playing good footy this year and look like they will play finals this season, but if the team is to do any damage in the finals arena then performing against another finals side is a must and Millicent provides a great opportunity.
If Casterton Sandford is to challenge Millicent then getting the ball in the hands of Hamish McCrae is a must.
McCrae is the third leading goal kicker for the league and has looked extremely dangerous in previous rounds.
However it will not just be down to getting the ball to their danger man, the game will also come down to how well the Cats can keep the ball away from Millicent’s Jacob Carger.
Carger has booted 27 goals this season and looks extremely dangerous, he leads the goal kicking for the league and has played an important role in Millicent’s winning streak
It’s going to be a major upset if Casterton Sandford can somehow get past Millicent away from home.
