WEST Wimmera Shire Council is taking proactive steps to address the critical housing shortage across the region.
Council is applying for $5m from the State Government’s Regional Worker Accommodation Fund – Round 2.


The proposed project includes the construction of homes in Kaniva and Edenhope on four Council-owned properties.


The development will include the construction of six new houses, which will be a mix of three- and four-bedroom homes.


The funding will also be used for infrastructure to activate another 13 blocks of land, allowing them to be fully serviced with power, water and sewerage. This will encourage private investment in building on these sites.


The project also includes a detailed design for a housing development at Kaniva, creating a shovel-ready project that will open up an additional 42 blocks on land.


The proposed location for this development is at the Kaniva aerodrome, which is the only remaining Council-owned land available for development.


If the funding application is successful, community consultation will be carried out to ensure the development meets the needs and expectations of residents.


Council will contribute a further $100,000 towards the project.


Initially, the new housing will accommodate Council staff, helping to alleviate pressures on the rental market.


Council also plans to encourage private investment to construct on the fully serviced additional blocks, ensuring broader community benefits and a long-term solution to the region’s housing challenges.


Currently, there are only five rental properties available across the entire West Wimmera Shire.


Mayor Tim Meyer said the lack of housing had been a significant barrier to attracting and retaining workers and residents in the area.


“This is a critical moment for our region; the lack of available housing is not just an inconvenience—it’s a barrier to economic growth and community wellbeing,” he said.


“By investing in these developments, we aim to provide immediate relief to the housing crisis while creating opportunities for private investment and long-term growth.”


Council has worked closely with stakeholders over the past few years to identify ways to address housing shortages.


“While challenges remain, this funding application is a significant step towards delivering housing solutions for the West Wimmera community,” Cr Meyer said.
