Western Border battle heats up

WEST GAMBIER V MILLICENT

In the most anticipated match of Round 10 West Gambier took on undefeated Millicent at Malseed Park in a top of the table Western Border Football League contest that had both sides desperate for victory.

The Roos declared their intent early, dominating and taking a significant lead at the end of the first quarter.

West Gambier scored freely kicking 32 points while restricting Millicent’s forward line to just 12 points.

Despite an early lead West Gambier was wary of the back to back premiers who demonstrated their strength in the second quarter.

However the quarter proved a slog for both sides and West Gambier fought hard in defence to maintain a slim lead, with the scores at half time 33-19.

The third quarter saw a fierce battle between the two teams, with both sides fighting hard for control of the match.

The Roos managed to maintain their lead, extending it slightly to 17 points, with a score of 48 to Millicent’s 31.

In the final quarter the Saints gave their all as the side tried to avoid its first loss for the season, however West Gambier held off the visitors efforts to stage a comeback, ultimately securing the victory.

The Roos ran out 19 point winners over the reigning premiers in the second hard fought match between the top two sides this season.

The best players for West Gambier were Andrew Stone, Jordan Williams, Kyle Giddings, Ethan Giddings, Jesse Pfitzner and Brandon Newton.

Their exceptional performances and contributions throughout the match were pivotal in securing the win for their team.

Millicent’s Clinton Gallio, Zac McGuinness, Kade Bradley, Harry Tunkin, Kade Varcoe and Micah Rupcic stood out with their impact on the game and were named amongst the Saints’ best.

The match provided an exciting contest between the two sides in what looks to be a grand final preview.
