Wilson hits score of day

A field of more than 90 golfers fronted the starter for  Saturday’s par competition at the Blue Lake Golf Club,  with the majority taking advantage of good golfing conditions.

Viv Wilson secured the best score overall and the win in the women’s competition with a superb score of +5.

The 36-handicapper started in  the best possible way with a positive, thanks to her par, which she  quickly followed up with another on the fifth hole.

She was a clear winner from perennial place getter Rosemary Martland (12), who produced another prize winning round with +2.

Warming up for the chance to pair with her partner for the  Queen’s Birthday Ambrose competition, Lesley McPherson took  third with -2.

Wilson added to her bounty with the novelty prize for Best Front 9.

Meanwhile, Jake Matthews was the overall winner in the men’s competition with his +4 winning score, with Brett Perryman a point behind on +3.

After starting with a 4 handicap, Zach Westwick turned on the  first nine holes with -2, but ended the day with 34 off the stick on the back nine.

After his only bogey on that nine on the 11th hole, Westwick scored a birdie on the 12th and 15th to return a +3.

Several fellow A graders finished on +1, including Jarrod  Ryan, Zeick Dalton and Tim Bates.

Another count back was  required in B grade to separate Colin Tester (17) and Tony  Brooks (14), who were both tied on +3.

Tester had a rough finish to his front nine and opening holes of the inward nine before settling down with +3 over the last six holes to hold off Brooks.

Two points further back were Brett Lewis (18) and Wayne Dunford (14), who tied on +1, with Lewis surviving the count back with a score of square despite not finishing three of his last four holes.

Dunford did all his scoring on the front nine with a -2 over his inward nine.

In a competition that normally favours the higher handicapped players, only one C grade player managed to finish in the positive: Brenton Speck (22) with his +1.

Speck had his troubles through the end of his front nine and the opening holes on the inward nine but then closed with +2 over his last 6 holes to hang on for the win.

Michael Millhouse (28) found some form, but while he could not build on his two pars on the back nine, he still finished square with his handicap and secured second place from Vic Smith (27), who took third with his -2.

A and B grade golfers filled the list of ball winners, headed by the unlucky Dalton, Bates and Dunford on +1, followed by Kevin Howell, Josh Gale, Josh Ransom, Jay Ilsley and Peter Mikelsen (square), Roger Gale and Justin Ploenges on -1.

Trevor Little cleaned out the  Eagles nest with his superb birdies on the 17th while Matthews  also won the novelty event.

No golf was play in the Tuesday competition, due to the weather conditions.
