Wine high-flyer’s experiment awarded

Patrick of Coonawarra was recently awarded the “Danger Zone” trophy for their 2021 Méthode Eucalypt Cabernet Sauvignon in the Young Gun of Wine Awards 2022.

The ‘Danger Zone’ trophy recognises an adventurous wine which pushes the boundaries and Patrick’s experimental wine caught the eye of the

Patrick of Coonawarra owner and winemaker Luke Tocaciu said he was “quite shocked” when he received the trophy and said it was nice to be recognised on a national level.

“It was a very prestigious competition that is quite competitive and tasting a lot of the wines around the room there was certainly some fantastic wines,” Mr Tocaciu said.

“So it was a real shock, but after I won the award I could definitely understand where the judges were coming from.”

Mr Tocaciu said the winning wine was “quite interesting” and had already received amazing feedback through the cellar door.

He said the Méthode range was small-batch wines which were about experimenting with Cabernet and Riesling in the winery.

“The eucalypt specifically was testing the theory the proximity of gum trees to the vineyard has an influence on the final wine,” he said.

Mr Tocaciu said he picked the grapes that were growing around the gum trees in their vineyard and fermented them separately in a small batch.

“It’s amazing to see the difference between that and our home block Cabernet, quite pronounced eucalyptus aroma on the nose, that minty character that comes through,” he said.

“And then on the palate you get some of that eucalypt that is quite developed into more of a fresh berry, raspberry character, which is really interesting.”

Mr Tocaciu said eucalypt was a known character in the wine industry and many winemakers tried to avoid getting the eucalypt character into their wine.

“But I really took that concept and turned it on its head to try and push the boundaries and see how much we could really concentrate that flavour, which is a very unique part of Australian winemaking,” he said.
