Winemaker’s memories uncorked

Rotary Clubs of Mount Gambier announce the auctioneer and special guest speaker for the Warwick Downs Estate’s Charity Wine Auction and Dinner Event

The combined Mount Gambier Rotary Clubs are all set to auction off a significant local wine collection, with all proceeds going to the Stand Like Stone Foundation.

On Saturday, April 6 a collection of over 260 bottles of quality aged Australian and French wines are being auctioned off at a special dinner event, to be held at Mount Gambier’s City
Hall.

Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West’s Neville Gilbertson said the collection has been made available by Robyn Downs and family on behalf of the late Warwick Downs, who passed away in December 2021.

“We’re very pleased to confirm that not only do we have well-known local identity and wine maker David Herbert conducting the auction for us on the night, but we also have Limestone Coast’s very own Greg Clayfield,” he
said.

“Greg is definitely a winemaker extraordinaire, winner of the 1981 and 1986 Jimmy Watson award as well as being awarded the 1988 International Wine Maker of the Year, which was presented to him at a dinner in the House of Commons
London.

“Greg will be providing the guests with an insight into his many years as a top wine maker travelling the world.”

Mr Downs was a prominent local lawyer and a valued member of the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier West for over 50 years and a lover of fine and classic wines, particularly Australian reds.

Mr Gilbertson said all auction proceeds will go to the Stand Like Stone Foundation, specifically supporting local students undertaking nursing studies.

“This is going to be a very enjoyable evening, whether you’re there for some great food, listening to Greg Clayfield’s wine adventures or bidding for some of the best Australian and French wines,” he said.

“This is a truly rare opportunity for wine lovers to add some impressive red and white varieties to their collections.”
