The distance between the top and bottom two sides of the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association Division 1 competition is growing after the fourth round of play on Saturday.
Centrals/Uniting maintained its unbeaten record with another commanding performance away from home.
Facing a spirited West Gambier unit, the ladder leaders showed its skills by winning twice the amount of sets to secure the overall prize.
Team leader Andrew van den Hurk put the winners on the front foot with a crushing six-love singles win over Ethan Schultz.
Despite the tough start, West bounced back through the hard work of Brady Cook, who edged out Ben Gaffney 6-4.
However, a pair of 6-3 wins to Noah Thomas and Ashlea Dunn handed Central/Uniting Church a solid lead which the hosts could not reel in.
Vanessa Maxwell’s 6-2 triumph accounted for Jo Sealey’s two-game win against Karen Mitchell to ensure West could not generate any momentum.
Armed with a four-set lead, Central/Uniting pressed home its advantage at the start of the doubles sequence.
The combination of Van den Hurk and Gaffney proved too powerful for Cook and Schultz, while the association president continued his perfect afternoon with an even more convincing performance alongside Thomas.
West regained some credit through a pair of wins kicked off by the hard work of Cook and Noah Lang.
The duo overcame Gaffney and Thomas 6-2, which was backed up by Sealey and Jessica Stutley, who out-gunned Dunn and Mitchell by the same margin.
Despite the late resurgence from West, it was not enough to derail the visitors, who stormed home with 6-0 and 7-5 victories from Dunn, Maxwell and Mitchell.
Glencoe’s underwhelming story of the 2021 season continued when it gave up all every set to the travelling Reidy Park outfit.
Only seven of 12 sets were completed as Reidy Park flexed its muscles on the reigning minor premier.
Sarah Edwards and Alice Tentye were the closest to success for the home side in their doubles match-up.
The pair pushed opponents Emily and Sharon Edwards all the way, but lost the tiebreaker.
The down-to-the-wire battle meant Glencoe was forced to endure a set less afternoon.
The singles were one sided with Cade Kelly kicking off proceedings with a 6-2 win over Will Hahn.
Joel Childs had an even easier time against Cameron Brooks, while Jayme Young’s clash only lasted three games.
Tentye showed the most amount of fight for Glencoe being within three games of opponent Sarah Edwards.
Glencoe’s misery continued in the doubles as firstly Zayne Young and Cade Kelly recorded a 6-1 win before Kelly and Joel Childs also won by the same margin.
Sarah and Laura Edwards managed to snatch three games from opponents Emily Edwards and Jayme Young, but the pattern of Reidy Park wins continued to the finish line.
In Division 2 West Gambier Blue overcame intra-club rival Red, while Reidy Park and Glencoe were also successful against Mount Gambier Green and Mount Schank respectively.
Division 3 was headlined by a tight battle between Mil Lel and Uniting with the former getting over the line, plus Centrals proved too strong for Suttontown Dons.
Wednesday night’s Fast4 Competition produced some lop-sided results last week.
Collins Crew continued on their winning way at the top of the ladder, with a 5-20 to 1-17 victory over Mount Schank White.
They did not have it all their own way however, with quite a few extremely close sets.
Will Boston fought extremely hard for Mount Schank, securing their only set for the night and going down 3-4 in both of his other sets.
Those results could have easily gone the other way and Mount Schank would have been right in the contest.
Youngsters Sarah Brown and Maggie Collins starred for Collins Crew, winning all three of their sets.
Too Cole for School kept the pressure on ladder leaders Collins Crew, with a big win over Mount Schank Blue 6-24 to 0-11.
Mount Schank tried their best but could not quite secure a set. David Cole stood out for the winners, with three very strong performances.
In the last match, the make-shift team of ‘Mixed Fast4 Team’ put in a great performance to take down Suttontown 5-21 to 1-6.
Both teams had some new faces, but it was the Le Cornu father son combination of Andrew and William, along with Lochie Arnold and Lachlan Patzel that dominated proceedings.
Nathan Beck and Penny Hurling combined to secure Suttontown their only set win for the night.
