Winter basketball season wraps up

The curtain came down on the 2021 Basketball Winter Season last Thursday night after an emotionally charged Junior Men’s Grand Final.

Roos Blue started as favourites but did not take into account the crowd favourite Drop Bears, desperate to win for Coach Kane Downie, who planned to suit up for Drop Bears before receiving life changing injuries in a car accident.

It was a tight affair with Roos Blue in front by one in the closing seconds until Cooper Holmes, managed a basket through heavy traffic to snatch a last gasp win 43-42.

Troy Moreland, busy Drop Bears guard, was named MVP for the Final.

Ultra-skilled Beagle Boys player, Sharnay Than was awarded MVP for the season.


Junior Girls


A vocal group of supporters watched the Under 12 Girls Final in which Diamonds reversed the second semi-final result to record a strong 44-31 win.

Molly Peacock (Diamonds) and Emmy Jeffrey (Fever) turned in impressive performances.

Fire, coached by Melissa Russell, were clear winners over Flames, 57-31, in the Under 14 Girls Gold Division final.

Flames, led by Claire Mitchell and Lily May, pulled off an unexpected win over Lightning in the Preliminary Final.

Elodie Adam however, turned in a match winning performance to lead Fire to the premiership over a gallant Flames.


Under 17 Girls

Macey Griffith and Stella Mobbs guided Roos to a solid win over Bulldogs in the Under 17 Girls grand final.

After an even first half, Roos took a grasp on the final, leading 43-25 at the last break and continuing in control for a 56-34 score at the final siren.

Roos’ Macey Griffith completed an outstanding season by being named MVP in the Final and scoring a strong win in the Season MVP.


Under 16 Boys


Bulldogs proved to be the class team of the Division 1 competition this season and cruised through to the grand final against the improving Cougars.

Third placed Panthers scored an upset win over Roos in the other semi-final and then challenged Bulldogs for most of the grand final.

Final scores read 45-38.

Bulldogs’ Harry Wright was judged MVP in the final.

Harry was joined by fellow talented junior, Mackye Baron from Roos as dual winners of the MVP for the season.

The biggest crowd of grand final week witnessed the Under 16 Boys Division 2 grand final between Roos Blue and Panthers Gold.

Roos Blue scored a comfortable win in the second semi-final but found Panthers Gold more determined in the medal game.

As a result, Panthers Gold ran out winners 59-29.

Top scorer for game, Rex Jones, was named MVP for final.

Maurice Goldsmith (Roos Red) is the MVP for the season in this division.


Under 18 Men


Under the guidance of Coach Robbie Young, Bulldogs Under 18 Men continued their dominance of this competition into the grand final when they easily accounted for Roos 60-38.

Curbing the skills and physical strength of Ben Young, Sam Lock and Mitch Garwood was too big an assignment for Nelson Forbes, Jack Wilkinson and team-mates.

Sam Lock received the Final MVP Award.

Committed and hard-working Ben Young was deservedly awarded the MVP for this season.

Junior Boys
In the Winter Under 12 Boys competition Boomers, through effective on court defence, reversed the second semi-final result against Wolves in the Blue Division grand final 26-18.

Digby Stephens (Boomers) and Fletcher Blackwell (Wolves) played well for their respective teams.

Magic recorded a comfortable win over Celtics, 60-43, in the Under 12 Boys Gold decider.

Banjo Stephens led well for Magic, while James Bryan worked hard for Celtics.

Blazers led the Under 14 Boys Blue Division competition this season.

They continued their form, under “stand in” coach, Erin Ross, in the grand final to defeat Suns 34-16.

Scott McBain finished off well for Blazers.

Excitement arrived in the Under 14 Boys Gold Grand Final.

Kings beat Jets in the semi-final before the latter then knuckled down and won back a place in the Final and went on to win 51-49.

Jets’ Hudson Croser played a strong game for Jets while Henry Pedler top scored for Kings.


Senior Grades

Bulldogs, by winning the Men’s and Women’s A Reserve grand finals, completed a dominant season.

The Bulldogs Men led throughout the season and easily secured the A Reserve flag 48-31 v Panthers.

Shaun Lock, was named MVP for the decider while team-mate Duncan Reid took out the Season MVP Award.

Roos finished minor premier in the A Reserve Women’s competition.

The Roos v Bulldogs decider had many momentum swings.

With 5 minutes left on the clock a three by Ellie Bouchier gave Roos the lead.

Brooke Edwards and Amelia Mahney replied to snatch back the lead for the Dogs.

A desperate Stella Mobbs closed the margin to one but could not find the hoop again as Bulldogs hung on 36-35.

Grand Final MVP was Amelia Mahney of Bulldogs, while Cougar Zoe Grigg won the season MVP Award.

The B Grade Men’s grand final was decided by a three-pointer nailed in fine style by Cougars Grey’s Brad Male with less than 10 seconds left on the clock.

Before the “buzzer beater”, Cougars White led 35-33, but the players could only watch as Grey snatched victory, 36-35.

Male was named MVP in the Final and Cougars’ White Joshua Camilleri was awarded the season award.

The Men’s Social Division 1 grand final was easily won by South Eastern Ravens over Couldabeenz.

The depth and balance in outside specialists, season MVP Kane Ransom and Josh Nobes complemented by the key were keys to Ravens’ 60-34 success.

John Stafford was awarded the grand final MVP.
