Amilk tanker driver has been labelled a hero after rescuing an elderly woman from her burning vehicle following a two-car collision at Tantanoola on Wednesday night.
Michael Sleep had been in his truck when he saw the burning vehicle at the T-junction of Agricultural Bureau Drive and the Princes Highway.
“Running towards the car, I could see flames coming out of the engine bay, it was fully involved in the engine bay,” Mr Sleep told 9News.
“I think if I was even 30 seconds later it might have been a different story, might have been more difficult to reach her.
“It was pretty chaotic, I was trying to talk to the triple zero operator with my phone in one hand and trying to get the lady out of the vehicle with the other hand, while holding a torch as well.
“No second thoughts, it was just instinct.”
After helping the 71-year-old to safety, Mr Sleep ran to assist the female driver of the other car.
The family of the rescued woman have publicly thanked Mr Sleep for his heroic actions.
The driver of the Ford, a 71-year-old Millicent woman, was taken to hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, while the driver of the Nissan, a 46-year-old Millicent woman, was also taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
